I've heard of trucks being equipped with black boxes to ensure that employees aren't slacking off on the job, but that's the 1st I've heard about cars. Wouldn't surprise me though.

My dad always said that "x is an unknown quantity, and a spurt is a drip under pressure". I tend to take self-professed "experts" with a grain of salt.

I read this on Monday and thought it would be of interest to the HN folks. There seems to be a real lack of information in English (either that or I'm not looking in the right places). I have seen people asking about this kind of informat

Will Power is my friend as well - water here too. I stick away from caffeine apart from the occasional tea. I figure that if I really need the boost it'll affect me more because I'm not a regular user. Only downside is that 2 teas gives m

China has been stockpiling the rare elements for some time now. They're necessary for a lot of high-tech goods, and would be very useful as a trade lever. Regarding the embargo on Japan, it was seen as a response to the recent territorial

Do you think that maybe the documents Jin had was perhaps confidential information that was not supposed to leave the office without permission? I'm sure ordinary businessmen don't need to take reams of confidential information with them un

Completely agree - brevity of thought make for a punchy article that is better to read and more likely to have an impact. The three main killers are (1) passive voice, (2) long words and (3) jargon. If you can write something that avoids th

Can you comment on your ability to successfully restore from backup? I know of organisations that diligently back up their data, but fail to regularly check that they can restore from backups.

It's been a while since I've touched awk, but I've certainly got a lot of use from it when ripping data out of logfiles and using it elsewhere on the command-line. I can recommend this text file of awk one-liners: http://www.pement.org/awk

It's not so much that it's an SQL injection attempt, more so that it's an attempt through paper, which is the same as the Little Bobby Tables one.

The problem I see is that it was all spent on construction work, and in particular white elephant construction work, which just had a temporary input. I would argue the result would be different if the investment had been in new fields if t

And more pointedly, who remembers the name of the astronaught who stayed up in the command module? I think his name was Collins, but I was a science/history buff as a kid. I can't even remember his first name.

Do you mind if I side-track a little and ask people's opinion of 3D in general? I've seen two movies in 3D in the past year - Avatar and Toy Story 3. While Avatar was fun, and Toy Story 3 exception, I didn't feel that the 3D really added m

Red meat certainly takes a lot of energy to produce, and may well be environmentally beneficial to cut it from your diet if that's your thing. Personally I stay away from beef because my genes have decided that I have more than enough iron

I guess I'm OCD in the fact that my Gmail tab is always my far-left tab - I know exactly where it is. It's the only Google feature that I really use (apart from Reader on my phone), and I'm pretty fussy about where I type passwords in.
