What’s the reason PIPs are a problem exactly? Who loses? Let’s say you actually are a bad fit, either due to effort or ability, you could try and work through it as a learning experience and leave when you have the opportunity. If it’s not

My work ThinkPad running Windows has exactly the same problem. Modern Standby I’m told.

No to put words in their mouth, but I suspect they were saying they use a text email client. If so, fair enough, but most people don’t. Most people actually use their phone or webmail in a browser tab, but that’s neither here nor there.

I don’t have a strong opinion about an email client in a browser but email clients already contain a web browser. This is due to practically all email being formatted in HTML. You could argue this is a giant mistake and you wouldn’t be wron

I think that Redhat’s been failing at the PR part of their business. I agree with all of your points about their motivation and value. They’re a valuable part of the community. From an outsider’s perspective, they were merged with IBM, “ki

Your description of the fediverse isn’t accurate. You’ve had a few people tell you that and your attack on my supposed inexperience with HN isn’t relevant (and is also ironic). Apologies if you took my assumption as an insult.

I get the sense that you’ve not tried it and you’re speaking extremely generally. That’s fine, you don’t have to. I’ll stop here though until you have an informed perspective.

You don't have to self host. That was a suggestion if you couldn't find a single other instance out of the thousands that exist that meet your requirements.

So having a central identity has pros and cons, right? One of the cons is you’d then be beholden to whomever runs the identity service and that takes away a lot of the autonomy of the Fediverse.

> Until there's a way where one user can decide what instances to see, it will be a crap experience unless you agree 100% with the whims of an admin, who made you jump through hoops only to defederate at the slightest disagreement.

Surely 75k for a secure password manager is better than 50k for an insecure one. They’re failing at their core competency.

Practically the entire web forces JavaScript to be enabled. I used to be pretty irate about it but that was 10 years ago and I’m tired.

Both @Gargron amd @dansup directly referred to there being a meeting and that it required an NDA. Whether that is concerning to you is up to you, but 2 of the people in question already stated it.

Your assessment of Meta’s motives seems accurate, but tbh that’s why I don’t use Meta’s products and mistrust their involvement in the Fediverse.

I’ve looked into this recently. Microsoft has ended support for RemoteFx [1] and Discrete Device Assignments requires a supported gpu dedicated to that VM. From my perspective, Hyper-V lacks a good vGPU story but would love to hear otherwis

They’re removing the GIL in some upcoming version. But in general it wasn’t really a problem. Most people don’t actually need multiprocessing and if they did it was handled by the library they’re using anyway. Which isn’t to say the change

r/ExperiencedDevs is such a weird place to me. It’s like the secondary school for r/CSCareerQuestions. It has builtin gatekeeping due to their goal of being for “experienced devs”. I’m also not surprised they aren’t participating.

The “official app” on iOS is AlienBlue which Reddit bought. So to start with, Reddit relied on the work of a 3rd party developer to make it for them. They’ve since made it bloated and slow and full of ads. Whatever right? Pretty typical for
