Though I'm a meat eater, I have a strong suspicion that the arrival of high-quality meat alternatives will cause a societal shift away from eating meat to the point where it would become rare. As it is, giving up meat is a huge declin

The trust fund is an accounting fiction. Social Security is paid out entirely by proceeds from people paying into the system. If ever the number of new people paying in is not enough to cover the outflows, then the system collapses. That

No; investments go toward productive work to create economic value. Social Security doesn't have any element that would actually create wealth. It works exactly like a Ponzi scheme.

These claims are extremely weak. Even taking them all at face value you get a straightforward account of a whistleblower. The only statement of harm speculates that documents that were not released got into the hands of Chinese or Russian

Yes, exactly. Rich people increase their wealth primarily through unrealized capital gains. It's very safe for Warren Buffet to proclaim he wants tax rates increased because this barely affects him at all.

No this article talks only about taxable income. Wealth inequality is far more important and for some reason nobody talks about it.

People continue to focus on income inequality and ignore wealth inequality. Income is a terrible way understand inequality and also not a good way to compare how inequality is changing, since the really rich people increase their wealth in

Hertz lives in an equilibrium where lots of people buy and operator their own cars. Autonomous cars may well move us to an equilibrium where most people do not own cars and instead rely on services. That totally changes the economics of t

Cutting the map in the Pacific just makes a lot more sense rather than cutting it in the Atlantic. Do we really need most of the space in the middle of the map to be water?

We need to move to a system where a tightly-regulated utility owns the wired infrastructure only, and leases access to a wide variety of ISPs, video services, etc. This solves the problem that the infrastructure costs involved create a nat

It's not a failure of Church-Turing. The whole point of my comment is that you can easy construct more powerful models that are "unreasonable" because they don't exist in our universe. It's the same for programmin

What would stop journals from blacklisting scientists who publish their articles under open access laws? Would anyone publish their article if they knew it meant never being able to publish in Nature again?

I'm not really sure I completely understand where the conflict is here. Even in the "machine model" the church-turing thesis "fails spectacularly" once you start adding in unreasonable things like halting oracles.
