I don't think that was the point of the parent comment. Obviously Stallman's system is not perfectly secure, but it may well be immune to exploits that require arbitrary code execution like Meltdown and Spectre.

It seems like in the case of Meltdown and Spectre, FOSS may have /everything/ to do with security. FOSS with the addendum that you don't execute arbitrary javascript, anyway. In a world where personal computers only ran code

While that argument may make no sense to you or me, it makes just as much objective "sense" as any other moral basis. Some people are strict utilitarians, some people have a deontological code, some people's morals come out o

I don't think this is true. "Trespass is defined by the act of knowingly entering another person’s property without permission." https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/trespass So it's illegal to, for exam

I imagine what prompted this thread was the growing tendency of software companies to hire for "Data Scientist" positions and imagine that what they'll be getting is analogous to a Database or Distributed Computing specialist

No, surprising though it may seem, renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro have all caused more deaths proportional to the energy they have produced than nuclear.

You've exhaustively listed every nuclear accident recorded and said, "That's a melt-down every 24 years" as if that were something terrible. The numbers do not support you. Nuclear has less deaths per kilowatt hour produ

Why is it said that, "Google is rightly troubled by the fact that its workforce is largely male."? I can't wrap my head around what Google is guilty of in this regard. It's said, or screamed, all over the Internet that &

Alright, I'll accept that definition of rant. I certainly agree that the unsubstantiated biological statements were an awful rhetorical tactic. Thank you for sticking with me and providing the quote that most irked you. It irks me as w

While the author used dubious rhetorical tactics (e.g. stating scientific "facts" without citation), he was never hostile towards any one person or group of people. Even if the argument he was making was that Google should fire or

I don't see how the exam's and job interview's focus (or lack thereof) on teamwork is relevant. How to make a better exam isn't really on trial here, because no matter how much data suggests that teamwork is as important

Was the bar lowered to recruit female or minority candidates? That's not a rhetorical question and I don't presume to have an answer to it. It was, however, the subject of the original memo, which suggests that some policies or pr
