Why is it said that, "Google is rightly troubled by the fact that its workforce is largely male."? I can't wrap my head around what Google is guilty of in this

Why is it said that, "Google is rightly troubled by the fact that its workforce is largely male."? I can't wrap my head around what Google is guilty of in this regard. It's said, or screamed, all over the Internet that "only" 20% of Google's software engineers are women, but the statistic that never accompanies it is that less than 20% of computer science degrees each year are awarded to women. There is clearly a problem somewhere, since as others have noted this number was far higher here in the US a few decades ago and is higher today in other countries, but the problem is also clearly not Google's. I wish the press would get off their collective back about it as it has clearly made them jumpy enough and the public angry enough that people are getting fired.
