I'd truly love to hear a good counterargument to this. I've argued much the same thing only to have the same opposing talking points restated verbatim.

And those consequences matter. You can't handwave them away and pretend they don't exist. Don't forget that you work in a fairly unique field. Many, many occupations cannot work from home.

This study suggests that the resulting rise in deaths isn't immediate. That it isn't measurable now does not mean it isn't coming. >1 %-point rise in the unemployment rate raises the risk of dying next year by 6%. https:&

At what cost? When do you factor in the additional deaths and other consequences from suicides, domestic violence, increased substance abuse, and so on? There are two sides to the equation.

You're going to get massively downvoted here because you dared question the hive mind. None of their approaches place any consideration on the damage caused by the mitigation efforts themselves. Suicides, domestic violence, overdoses,

The NY study does align fairly well with similar studies done in Santa Clara County and Los Angeles County in California, though. All three indicate a significantly lower IFR than previously expected.

Influenza R0 has varied historically between 0.9 and 2.8 [0], where covid-19 is typically quoted as having an R0 around 2.3-2.5. It’s not substantially different in that regard. Lethality estimates also suffer from being based on bad data.
