While I definitely agree, I do think the essence was a little muddled by the alien contact story when compared to the short story.

I disagree extremely strongly. I thought a lot of the tone, which made the short story so good, was lost, probably due to the medium and the audience. It became much more of a sci-fi alien thriller than a commentary on mortality. I found th

Look, I understand that this should be a topic of conversation. I have no problem with that. If Québécois feel like the education they are receiving is sub-par then there definitely should be a discussion about it. But! What I also think is

Exactly, but that's why the area IS meaningful... Something the size of the Pearl River Delta can't possibly be cohesive enough to qualify as a single metropolitan area (yet). So comparing it to one is a bit arbitrary. Also, those

Of course it's meaningful. Because, due to its size, the Pearl River Delta contains what are essentially 11 different cities - each with its own city center. Where as the Greater Tokyo Area includes 6 - all substantially smaller than,

Hey, I have a question for people using ST3... Should I upgrade from ST2? There's not a real reason I haven't, just a question of utility.

I got linked this article ( https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/6-things-id-do-i-got-laid-off... ) today, actually. Thought it had some interesting thoughts.

The total area of the Pearl River Delta is about 40,000 km^2... The total area of the Greater Tokyo Area is about 4,000 km^2... Seems like a pretty arbitrary comparison if you ask me.

No one is saying that Vim key-bindings aren't incredibly useful, I'm saying that there is a reason those key-bindings are in most text editors and IDE's ... because people are using those editors instead of Vim. Also, most d

This is the exactly the problem though. We aren't speaking about niches, we're speaking about all text editor users. And in that case, I think Vim and Emacs don't do nearly as well as some may think.

by ravitation 12y ago
This is what I was expecting. And, I think this is very much just a perception, as you say. I think it's rather unlikely that VIM and Emacs are actually the most used editors, or even among the most used. I think it's interesting

Speaking with genuine interest... What would you expect the top (i.e. most popular) text editors to be?

Neither of these were "killer apps". As has been noted for radio, 55% of American homes had TVs in 1954 (rising to 83% by 1958). This was an increase from 0.4% in 1948. During this time of rapid adoption, the most popular shows we

The extremely derivative plot didn't help either. I actually came away with an active dislike of the series. But, I like the connection to semantic errors.

I find it really hard to watch foreign TV/Movies with subtitles because I lose almost all of the audio, and am pretty much just reading the whole time - path of least resistance to understanding, I guess.

This is just untrue. I can say city X is "my city" because I was born there. I can say city Y is "my city" because I grew up there. I can say city Z is "my city" because my family has roots there. "My city

Unfortunately, if the US News' rankings suffer from certain problems, these rankings suffer much more heavily. These rankings compare universities that have far more quantitative differences than the US News' rankings; they compar
