You may be right about the Community Promise. There are dissenting views, though ( http://www.fsf.org/news/2009-07-mscp-mono ) I'm sure Google's lawyers considered the Java choice safe too. If the Oracle lawsuit is resolved in Google's fa

It's really more about how long it's been since you learned new stuff. Lots of programmers in their 40s learned most of their skills writing Windows apps and, at least the ones I know, are very resistant to change. If you just looked at o

As far as I know, despite vague and generous public announcements, there is no legally-binding obligation by Microsoft to not do with .Net what Oracle has done with Java in suing for patent infringement. ECMA standards do not require any re

YouTube only represents a tiny portion (<1%) of Google's revenue. GMail, Google Docs, Google Earth, etc. only represent a tiny portion of Google's revenue. While your larger point may be correct (though I hope not) they've always show

I remember reading somewhere that pilot accident rates are high for very low-time pilots, then begin to decrease around 100 hours and then increase again between 500 and 1000 hours, perhaps as pilots become more confident than their skills

It is often recognized as bad design - though I don't think that's always fair. I thought of this because I was just reading some Java code that passed around a context object with all kinds of random things stuffed into it. It was, in ef

Long-term best interest and short-term best interest aren't always the same. If they go back on "don't be evil" they're going to lose a lot of the good will they've built up and that will hurt them a lot in the long term.

Sounds a little like the line in Watson and Crick's first paper about DNA. They said "It has not escaped our notice..." to introduce the idea that the subject of the paper might be the secret to life, the universe, and everything.
