I work for AWS. Just as an FYI you don't have to use a NAT instance there are also NAT gateways which I find easier to manage: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonVPC/latest/UserGuide/vpc-na...

I refuted some of the networking claims in that article previously (I work for AWS). Especially the bizarre claims that you have to get a C4.4xlarge for 1gpbs... The 220 mpbs network cap claim is just not true. Just run iperf3 on any aws in

Ok, if you guys pursue something like this again definitely check out something like storage gateway. It can help reduce the load in a live migration scenario like this.

Why not? Plenty of serious companies use DDB or MongoDb or plenty of other databases for their "serious applications"... this seems like a rule based on a bad experience. Would love to hear about it.

I have and I had no issues. Website had peak load of only a few hundred requests per second and was Zappa running flask. Not sure if you consider that production or not. Disclaimer: I work for aws

If a spot instance terminates in the first hour you're not charged for it. You can grab spot blocks as well for specific duration workloads.
