Right there's https://a.gup.pe/ but it's a hack and isn't meant to work long term. The long term thing is proper group actors and stuff in ActivityPub, and it's being discussed here I believe: https:&#x

We agree fundamentally: federation is not compatible with community-on-a-server, and the latter is being phased out by the Mastodon devs. The future is in groups that can span multiple servers and fully use federation.

Federation isn't symmetrical: I might be able to read mastodon.art posts, but be blocked such that people there can't see me. But that's not really an issue. Being part of the fediverse is learning that people may not want to

20 requests/sec is absolutely nothing for a server in 2022. Even if you have many relationships, any individual server will handle the load without any fuss. Worth that can happen is a few minutes in the propagation of messages, which

> whether I should start my own server This is the right answer. All the questions about moderation, resources, choice and whatever will disappear and you'll be part of the Fediverse like anyone else.

Why yes, if you reply to someone they will see you reply, unless they or their admin has blocked you or your instance. Just like any federated network.

One user per server is absolutelty fine. Don't fall for the hype telling you that you MUST be part of an existing instance: the Fediverse goes beyond your server. Honestly at this point if you don't want to self host just pick any

I built this: https://sr.ht/~rakoo/rss2ap/ . It posts RSS entries to a given account, and that account can now be subscribed to, entries can be commented, etc... It works well for one or two feeds but can get tedio

Exactly, email servers like Gmail, Yahoo, hotmail are extremely centralized. Even if the protocol is open and anyone can technically speak on the same level, being big gives way more leverage over where the network is going. Being centraliz

You absolutely can [start your own pool], it just takes a lot of work to become profitable. Which is the only reason PoW blockchains still exist.

It's also funny considering that blockchain absolutely uses central servers. The bulk of mining is still done on big datacenter farms and you can't really be part of the game without joining a pool.

How exactly is it hard to enter the fediverse ? Yes, you need to spend time to understand what you're going into, to understand the lingo, the rules, the etiquette. But it's normal, because Mastodon is not Twitter2, the fedivers

The thing is, AP is not just Mastodon. Mastodon is only one software and only one usage. If Mastodon numbers grow, then the AP is more interesting and it is suddenly more interesting for other platforms to consider AP, and for users to use

Mastodon absolutely doesn't want to be the next twitter. It is antithetical with the spirit of the creator and the community. If an actor wants to hyper centralize its users, bets are other platforms won't federate with it
