It was the sales cycle that killed my company off (many years ago). When three or four deals, with a 6 month lead time turned into an 18 month lead time, as things got pushed into next year, it meant we simply ran out of cash. And with such

The key thing that worries me about it is even if no-one reads all those emails that are stored, what if they are mined for data and used to make predictions? Last.fm can guess the type of music I like about 25% of the time, Google can gues

This is somewhere where android fragmentation is truly an issue. iOS didn't have granular switchable permissions a couple of versions ago but as the OS moved forward so did the apps.

Interesting, given that the original article makes the point about Steve Jobs' advice. Apple is a company that famously suggests and pushes people into how it thinks things should be done. From what you are saying, Larry seems to have

Maybe, but once trust starts to erode, the effects of it may not be seen for a few years. And once lost it's extremely difficult to get back. I certainly get the feeling that Google's halo is slipping.

I assume it means "zero with a line through it" which was used on older computers to distinguish zeroes from the letter O on low res screens.

It's the same trade-off though - how much security can I provide versus how much security can they provide? The insurance is just an incentive to keep my stuff safe (and in the case of savings guarantees, an incentive to keep consumer-

Why do you store your money with an external organisation that you don't control? Because they offer better security than I can build in to my own home (at least not without significant effort) and they offer guarantees should my money

I don't get why people wouldn't see it. At the beginning it has a speech about the failure of democracy, how violence is the only legitimate force in the universe. Government by an elite, with restricted rights for civilians (wan

Not relevant if your startup never deals with any other companies; a huge number of which work entirely in MS Office.

My daughter has an email address. If I send anything to it I need to tell her (in person, text, twitter, facebook messenger, skype - pretty much anything but email) to check it. She has switched off notifications on her phone because all sh

It sort of worked for me - after reading it I gave up smoking day-to-day - just like that. It was amazing. But I still smoked when I went to the pub and had a drink - I guess it's a deeper link between them. To stop that I went for h

Aye, I've played with it. But, lovely as it is, it doesn't have the momentum that BeOS (briefly) had, before MS's OEM contracts crushed it.

There are two sides to this. Firstly, there are rightly the concerns about interoperability. And from "our" (meaning people who use computers all day long) point of view, losing files is like losing a leg. But secondly, there are

That's precisely the reason that the Financial Times cancelled their iOS app and went with a pure HTML edition a while back - they wanted the subscriber information and Apple refused to give it to them.

I think that's the key. I can't imagine much being better at Request/Response MVC-style CRUD apps than Rails (can't speak for Django). But the question how much demand will there be for that style of app in the future?
