It’s always sad to see people lose their jobs, but it’s telling how often it’s ex-Googlers posting about layoffs. Feels like a lot of the shock is just realizing they’re just as replaceable and as much of a "cog in the machine" as

Do you have a source for remote operators intervening all the time ? The 17k miles number is also for their testing with a safety driver, which means it's inherently tougher than the environments they operate without a driver. If you&

See https://waymo.com/safety/impact/#methodology They compile human crash data from various sources (NHTSA, state data). But they are at a city level, not specific streets or areas. So they adjust the human benchm

Agreed. Google isn't aggressive enough to productize many of their ideas and their existing products feel like they're developed by N different companies with no unified experience.

Tesla promised unsupervised self driving for all existing cars that can drive anywhere and promised 1 million robotaxis by 2020. Neither of them exist. That sounds like vaporware to me.

As long as it needs active driver supervision, it’s not “completely autonomous”. Even Tesla doesn’t think so, which is why they have this disclaimer on their product page: > Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) are intended for

Indeed, Windows or Android are a better example than Apple. Waymo only designs the systems added to the vehicle, but they do have input over some parts of the vehicle design. Geely (Zeekr) is building a purpose-built robotaxi for them that&

Apple doesn’t own any factories to make their hardware. Their vertical integration goes as far as hardware design and software. Pretty much exactly what companies like Waymo are trying to do.

Not if OEMs don't have the technology. Making cars is the easiest part of self driving. Once you have the tech, you can farm the manufacturing out to many OEMs (like Waymo is doing with Hyundai and Geely) and then OEMs become the middl
