I installed windows NT in a virtual machine for kicks a few months back. Then installed office 97 on it. If you do that and open slack immediately afterwards it feels painful instantly. The difference in how it feels is quite scary.

Yep. Had exactly that experience this week. They're trying to teach my youngest how to subtract with carry. Now I taught her the column method about a year ago but she's not allowed to use that suddenly due to a new idea they have

When asked to compare I always immediately get instructed by subordinates to apply the existing lies they were telling. That's how you manage cloud costs!

It’s really not a rounding error. What happens is we have hundreds of these little rounding errors and some poor dude exists solely to work out where all the money is leaking out of the budget. Then you find it’s some weird inter VPC peerin

Actually I had a Mac mini with the touchpad and the damn thing disconnected three times a day. All my input devices have wires now and the stick out of the right places.

That’s about right. I remember when they switched windows phone 7 from CE to NT with similar arrogance and everyone went pfft and walked away.

I predict it will disappear from the market within 2 years with no replacement leaving people to limp along on an iMac. Not like it hasn't happened before.

I do miss the plastic ones myself. My sweat dissolves macbooks and they give me a rash.

Yes. I'd like to see a decent-ish Ryzen APUs such as the 3400G up against one of these as well. I did notice that the cinebench for the M1 is only about 10% higher than my Ryzen laptop (T495s) which is laughable as it's a 3500U an

Because Microsoft, much like most of the ecosystems around ARM, didn't build their own CPU. They got an off the shelf mobile chipset, customised it slightly, rebranded it and then chucked the whole shit heap of windows on top.

Wrong. Apple's iOS/macOS development footprint is far far far smaller than the footprint of generic software development using macOS. I have seen a lot of developers shitting the bed this week over the state of macOS both in perso

True. From a regular Fedora and occasional windows user Office runs on it, games work on it, Thinkpad touchpad drivers aren't shit, Microsoft To Do is still better than anything anyone else has come up with, fractional scaling that wor

Yes Epic are bastards too. And Zoom. In fact these days it's wall to wall bastards. But the end user doesn't care. They bought something and they want to keep it and use it. And that's where the buck stops.

This whole release cycle is just one gigantic facepalm after another. I am feeling pretty heavily smug that I got rid of my Apple kit earlier this year because I wasn't happy with the direction of the platform.

It's not even that. This is a distraction from the real issue which is this technology exists not to improve the security posture but to enforce market control. So go back a few weeks and you buy a copy of Fortnite, Apple and Epic lock

I’m working on the same thing and the phone at the moment. I doubt I’ll be able to go cold turkey so I’m blowing one app away every two weeks until I don’t need it any more. It’s not as hard as it felt like it was going to be.

It was inconsistently awful mostly. Now we have replaced it with consistently awful. So the net gain is zero. I miss the bit between the two fads. Really people need to just stop fucking around with user interfaces and breaking our workflow

I’d rather avoid it. I have orders of magnitude better input devices on the desktop. I’d rather not keep switching back and forwards as using a laptop is like doing stuff with oven gloves on.

Most of the time yes. But each time you have to reason about where you can grab a piece of it because there is now no one place to do so. Note I’m a Gnome user mostly now which is a fine example of how stupid this is.

Whoever stole all the title bars on operating systems recently needs to be shot for crimes against humanity. There’s nothing to get hold of any more.
