This isn't even tied to iCloud, they can scan your device even if you don't use iCloud. iOS downloads CSAM scanning code from Apple and runs it locally—hence, client-side tool.

While these things are reprehensible, I don't see much of them as "betraying" me, the user, as much as I do this new tool.

I just discovered that we both may have been wrong. Looks like you can skip the AfC review process entirely and this is given the go-ahead by Wikipedia (it's not frowned upon). Basically, you have to create a Draft-namespace article (f

This isn't cleverly anti-Apple, it's just petty. I have plenty a gripe against some things Apple does, but the piece here makes a net zero good points.

Computational photography (what you call "some are enhanced with AI or whatever Machine Learning") is a perfectly legitimate evolution in the field of consumer photography. I'm not sure why you are so critical of it.

It doesn't run live on your phone—rather, you back it up using Apple software and then run the tool on the backup. So it never touches your phone directly.

Strange. I see things like • quality original skits & memes • craftsmen making shorts about things such as the assembly process for a certain furniture • doctors showing day-in-the-life videos as well as quick health advisories and PSAs

This is so painfully true. I've tried to submit two articles so far to AfC (articles for creation) and both were rejected. It's puzzling to me because I often see extremely low quality articles (with just one sentence, for example

Another explanation is the hardware root of trust. On iOS, for example, hardware root of trust in a separate physical security processor validates all code in a chain. An exploit cannot gain persistence across a reboot unless it has access

I am just fascinated by the amount of work and effort that goes into this. A simple view-source shows tens of thousands of lines of code... for a free blog. Incredible

Can someone ELI5 what this POC actually does? As someone with little experience w/ iOS internals or its kernel, I’m not sure what I’m looking at. Does it run code as root? Write kernel memory?

Realistically, how useful is compromising modem firmware if like 98% of communication done through it is encrypted at the AP level? It’s sorta like wiretapping a fiber optic cable—okay, what now?

I'm not really sure how I feel about this. An issue that immediately jumped out at me is privacy, especially when they advertise web browsing (Brave, Chrome, Firefox) as a good use of this product. I wouldn't feel OK doing around
