The side effects in the scaffolding are purely an implementation detail. For non-interactive use (like a compiler) you could implement the program as a function taking and returning a string.

"indent" the program (for C) has been around for a while. The other nice thing about automated formatting is that everyone can edit code in their preferred format, as long as they convert it back before checking in (for readable diffs)

I think the comment advocates simpler solutions, not vim-golf style "compress as much as possible and use single-character variable names". The idea is to remove as much accidental complexity as possible, to focus on the essential. Signal-t

Technically, you only know you didn't break the tests. But assuming well thought-out tests, that's a good indication that you haven't broken the code.

That's what I meant by "possibly" for other reasons. I wasn't sure whether you were enjoying it because of that. Sorry for doubting you :)

It is absolutely opinion. For a start, it precludes a sane implementation of focus-follows-mouse. Secondly, for frequently used commands, keyboard shortcuts will be faster anyway (I'm aware of the study you're probably going to mention, but

In that situation I'd likely as not just backspace to the offending location and continue typing. Although I have been known to map caps+hjkl to the arrow keys. (I'm assuming your situation is a typo while you're inserting a short string, r

Well done! I know the feeling of working on things and never shipping. I recently decided to actually see a small program (vim plugin) all the way through from idea to documented, installable release. It's also highly bare-bones (around 10

Alternatively VsVim for Visual Studio. I prefer it, although I couldn't give any reasons why. It still fails the "Does it break flow by not implementing some feature or other?" test fairly frequently though. First thing that comes to mind i

That line made me think of the Hemingway quote: “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don't know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and

I always thought the main argument for barefoot running was that it makes heel strikes and other things noticeably unpleasant, thus encouraging proper technique (forefoot striking). Source: I don't run, but I read an article once.

For the record, it's not that text editing 200% faster or whatever will make a significant difference in productivity. For me it's about removing one more impediment that gets me out of the state of flow. And I am more productive in that

I do wish you wouldn't use quotes around "CS" so much. What you were studying is exactly what computer science is. I agree it's probably a bad name for it. Maybe "computation science" would be better. Somehow people have this idea what "
