Saying Nate Silver is "wrong" is like saying the weatherman is wrong. Neither is taking a position, just reporting an aggregated statistic.

Is it fair to call this a similar service to Zapier that runs at a lower level of abstraction? This appeals to me, because I find its much easier to express myself in code. Zapier is awesome because it makes it so non-programmers can link a

A hosting company without 24 hour support is not a hosting company. Go with Rackspace. They're expensive compared to budget hosts, but they seem to have an army of sysadmins available 24/7/365 that never say "that's your problem" / "not in

Microsoft has always provided amazing support for our Office 365 account (hosted Exchange, like Google Apps). Its a paid service though ($6/user/month), so perhaps that's the difference in our experiences. Most recently, I filed a support

My assumption is these bot accounts are used for selling Likes/Follows on Facebook, and they Like everything in sight so that the paid Likes blend in. That said, its unbelievably frustrating if you are trying to run Facebook ads. Nothing ag

Absolutely does not work on Facebook. Or, I can't figure it out. Every time I run Facebook ads I target them to Raleigh, NC, USA only. Almost all the resulting clicks are foreign (according to the IPs I see in my analytics). YMMV

Windows 7 does this in a cool way: http://superuser.com/a/277955 It tries to load a text file over HTTP ( http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt ) and fetch the DNS record of dns.msftncsi.com. If the return of either is not as expected, Windows

This is an example of comments that are hurting HN's quality. Absolutely nothing useful to add to the discussion, just snark. Yet for some reason its the highest voted comment.

Anecdotal, but maybe helpful: we had a customer purchase software from us almost a year ago, who paid via PayPal but using their Visa. They've now initiated a chargeback. When that occurs, Visa takes the money from PayPal, who takes it from

Another option would be to leave with the student, and let your other "kids" stay if they want to. That's a pretty shitty experience, to be the only one who can't get in and have to walk away alone. A little solidarity would have gone a lon

I'm curious to see if this works. "SETI but paid" is a very tempting idea, but we could never get the back of the envelope math to work out to the point where we could pay the contributors anything compelling (e.g., enough to offset their p

We implemented Trello, along with daily working/billing about a month ago, and I don't think we'll ever go back. Working on one project per day instead of trying to do 100 things at once cut my stress in half and doubled my productivity. Tr
