Not everyone who can run a node.js server wants to ( raises hand ). Think about Mailgun: obviously I'm capable of running a mail server and parsing incoming mail. But they can do it better, at a price that's cheaper than my time, and give m

It sounds like the basic idea is that these flights are there for the taking, but the search engines to find them all suck, to the point that someone will pay $40 to hire a flight search expert. Some immediate concerns: Is this really a pro

Considering Google's ARPU is ~$30, and Facebook's users aren't nearly as valuable as Google's (IMO), that's a big hell no.

To that end, you guys may want to try creating some evergreen content pages that are accessible to the search engines. Right now there's only 3 pages (other than your blog) which can be reached by a crawler: home, about, & contact. Mint

Your thesis is that without the death penalty there would be more Ajmal Kasabs. That there are would-be-terrorists who don't act because of the death penalty. To me, that's absurd on its face. Such persons are beyond reason. Don't forget, a

You can make your own pretty easily with a bash script. You basically just need to clone from git, setup a VirtualHost, and restart Apache/nginx. I don't have experience setting up Scala, Ruby, etc, but I've done this for PHP and its trivia

Big fan of Doodle or Die. Two things I was very impressed with: 1) Ability to play without signing up. When I finally did sign-up, they asked for few permissions from Facebook (only name and email, IIRC). 2) Trolls don't ruin the game. The

Awesome story. Reminded me of this one from Derrick Sivers: "In 1996, I had a little record label, so I got a UPC barcode account, so I could put unique UPC barcodes on my CDs. I had to pay $750 to the Universal Code Council to get a compa

This explains a lot, thanks. We noticed that the traceroute for one of our domains was running through Asia (usually DFW) and found it odd. It also changed shortly when the sites came back online. Glad to know it was just a mistake though,

My biggest complaint with Skype is its inability to persist chat messages when one client is disconnected. If this addresses that it would be great. That said, we're using HipChat now and love it. If you use Skype for group chat and don't u

Regarding the changelog specifically, I found this to be quite weird: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:FhfL-lo... (The changelog that's posted live ends at 3/06/2012. The one in Google's cache lists changes up to 4/23,

For instance, given a street segment ranging from 1000 to 2000, it takes a very simple calculation to determine that a house at 1500 should be about halfway. This is why its so much harder to geocode in rural areas. I suspect its also why

Definitely. I meant that it probably didn't use the clipboard or keyboard emulation, and so it would be safe from those particular attacks. Didn't mean to imply it would be safe from everything. To nitrogen's point, there's definitely a cor

Its been a while (AOL ;), but IIRC the Windows API lets you SET_TEXT directly by window handle. Assuming that's how 1Password works, it should be safe. I think that's a fair assumption because using the clipboard or SendKeys to an input box

Might be asking to much, but is it possible to get a direct link to the file? Otherwise programs like HipChat are unable to auto-embed the photo, because its HTML dressed as an image. For example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/caha7e5v0js24mj/

Hey Greg and Liyan! Those are great steps, didn't know you had done them. Helps a bit. I'd still have to replace your widget, but it would at least be possible. I'm certainly open to brain-picking, email me anytime (in my profile).

For AdSense? (assuming, I'm surprised how high it is too) Honestly AdSense eCPM is through the roof since they started doing retargeting. Its now much more about your demographics than your content. For example, back in the day, a forum for

An easy litmus test: Would it be OK for the cleaner to subcontract the work? If so, it could be legit. If not, they're employees. From the original thread, I don't get the impression he'd be OK with subcontracting, so he is probably non-com

It reminds me of HN itself. I don't want to know what the "average" likes to read, or even what people like me like to read. I want to know what smart, interesting people (not me!) like to read. In other words: I want curation by an expert,

We currently use SWFUpload + ImageMagick + (sometimes) Aviary in our PHP apps. We're using Mailgun for receiving images via email/SMS. I'd love to replace that with Chute. Checking it out now.
