Agree, it sounds like most of their issues were solved in 1.2. Huge nested arrays definitely sounds like they aren't controlling the recursion level properly, which is quite simple in 1.2 as you mentioned. Caching is also quite painless in

AFAIK, Google Voice does not allow commercial use. But one could definitely use Skype, ribbit, Twilio, etc for the same purpose. Its a pretty good idea.

Yes, that's right. Your tracker has already been using the DHT to find peers for quite some time. Here's a brief explanation of trackers and DHT, hope its helpful: A tracker serves 2 purposes: 1) Hosting the .torrent file (which is basicall

Glad to help. I'll ask him on Monday if he has any interest in outsourcing, if it was automated enough I would think so. Of course it would fall on me to do said automation, so we'll have to see what the numbers look like. ;)

I've been frustrated with GA's new event tracking actually, and was going to try Mixpanel as an alternative. Here's my qualms with GA's events, maybe you've been able to work around them? 1) It doesn't tell me which page the event happened

I like this a lot. Nice job taking an idea and running with it. At $1/letter this doesn't work, at $3/letter its an enviable opportunity. I find most of the comments here to be quite pessimistic, so here's a few things to consider: There ar

Agree 100%. He has some good things to say, but its more anecdotes and bits of motivation than specific, actionable advice. Still valuable in its own right though. I personally get a lot out of Seth's perspective, but I can certainly unders

IANAL, but I think you're right. They really can't tell you what to do with public data even if they provided it to you, because as you said you can't copyright facts. Feist Publications vs. Rural Telephone Services is the most relevant cas

Brilliant, thank you for the explanation and the Wikipedia link. I'm going to stop by the library this weekend to see if they have any books on compiler design, do you have any recommendations there? Thanks again, its great to learn somethi

Really interesting, thanks. I don't spend a lot of time with compiled languages these days. Question: how can the compiler be sure an array's length wouldn't have changed? I suppose it could examine the code within the loop, but then the sa

Checking the length of an array on each iteration of a loop is an amateur mistake, in any language. Some of these points were pretty nitpicky, but I thought this was a valid complaint.

Perhaps, but it does seem that the Google Closure developers are unaware of these optimizations. Unless the compiler was written by an entirely different group, I would be surprised. Of course, there's an easy way to find out. :)

Kids cereal marketing is fascinating, from the toys to the way the mascot's eyes tend to look down [1]. I didn't get to make a lot of decisions as a kid, but cereal was one of them. I was also exposed to another strange aspect of cereal mar

I have a few close friends who attended Oberlin, and I was always impressed with the 5 week break in winter. IIRC, its not so much time off, but rather time you're expected to pursue something, anything. Is that correct? I wish other colleg

That's a great list, and very similar to the language in our standard NDA. I have no problem signing an NDA with those terms. We've never worked with a megacorp, so its nice to know they're handling this in a more professional manner than s

It might not cost as much as you think to have a lawyer generate an NDA for you. We've had our lawyer generate 10 or so general contracts that we can modify to use in most situations, which I would recommend to any business owner. Most lawy

For what it's worth, it's true that there are landmined NDA's that are really IP agreements in sheep's clothing, and yeah you shouldn't sign those --- but for the most part, a standard NDA isn't going to limit what you can work on in the f

From the article: "Rupert has got dealmaker's flu, a bug he acquired when he bought MySpace and sold the exclusive right to index it to Google." Is this a joke? If not, the author seems to grossly misunderstand search engines.

I fundamentally disagree with this. If an existing solution exists, one shouldn't try to create his own? Then why did Linus build Linux? There's also a lot to be said for curiosity. I'm currently building an email client in my spare time, n
