I love both spreadsheets and Python/Jupyter. But neither is Excel the silver bullet? The reason the error is caught (and the real lesson) is more because he tried to reproduce his work as opposed to a particular technology stack.

Thanks for the link. Makie.jl looks interesting. I didn't find it last time I looked into Julia. I'll get it a shot at some point to see how usable it is.

Python is sufficiently readable, and with the right extension, it is sufficiently fast for vast majority of the purposes. For Julia to truly gain momentum, I think it needs a "killer app/library". However, I'm not sure w

A language like Ruby can be very productive for someone who has climbed the learning curve to learn all its ins and outs. However, in my experience, this turns into a large productivity drain the moment someone else (who is less of an exper

As someone that have spent a lot of time in both Ruby and Python (and specifically a lot of hours in the Python scientific compute stack), I would say that Python is significantly more readable. Python is also significantly easier to teach

Yeah you're right on that one. I probably over-extended the use case here as I'm still just learning about this and thus tried to apply it to everywhere. I guess one thing you can maybe do is to use CI to validate that mlockall in

BPF is indeed a pretty interesting technology. As the knowledge about it becomes more widespread, I anticipate that we will unlock some new capabilities both in terms of tracing. Brendan Gregg's book ( https://www.brendangreg

Maybe both your observation and HN is right: the distribution is multi-modal in the sense that (presumably) there is a large majority of people where the thumbnail works for and views the content, and then there is a small (and possibly voc

The cage design is probably objectively pretty bad (I don't want to work in there), but the headline is a bit sensationalist. The idea here is that Amazon has a bunch of robots running around in a massive environment. Safe robot-human

That's interesting to know. I didn't know that turbine manufactures are that state of the art. I mostly thought they are just building some sort of standard turbines and deploying it to different places like building houses. Evide

Not a wind turbine design engineer, but have done some fluid dynamics work. Thus, I'm not super familiar with what "wake blockage" is. A tentative look suggests that it might be similar to this work that I encountered[1], whi

Is there something we can do to the title to distinguish the Coldfusion language with nuclear cold fusion? The title seems applicable to both and even the first paragraph could be misleading if you assumed the latter.

What's the point of using DoH over the local network? We can generally assume the local network is "secure". If I want to use DoH when sending DNS queries to the outside world, I can setup my own forwarder to forward DNS quer

To add to this issue from a personal level: for those who use a Pihole or operate other internal services from within their own home network will now have to change the settings for _every application_ using DoH on that network. This could

This works pretty well, especially if you have personal computers behind different NATs. One of the issue is still that you have to distribute the tor domain name out all over the place. You also need to keep the keys safe if you want to ke

I find that learning raw TLA+ to the point where you're comfortable reading it and internalizing what the spec is saying to be a critical skill to be able to write specifications successfully. This is because PlusCal translates direc

The last time I checked the password-less root is on first setup with telnet, accessible only via LAN and with WIFI off. The first thing it asks you to do is to set a password, before enabling SSH.
