Well, Daimler announced something similar just about two months ago: https://www.daimler.com/investors/reports-news/financial-new... It wants to separate its car business from truck business and plans to rename th

Corruption is a real problem in Germany and auto makers have a lot of influence on politicians, so the corporate and the political apparatus are interested in hiding these crimes, because a large part of our economy depends on them.

I can only recommend watching this 2015 talk at German Chaos Communication Congress about the technical details of the scandal. It's in English and really worth watching if you're technically interested. They reverse engineered th

This is an additional safety net. It's like doing backups. Of course you should replace your hard drive before the other drive breaks down, but you want to have a backup in case your server burns down.

There's a point for the developers and to communicate features and bugfixes. And they still help in supporting installations. But you are correct, they become less important. They (patch versions at least) don't necessarily have

I understand your position, but the example here feels a bit off. If we were talking about an auto-upgrade from 2.x.y to 3.0.0 I'd probably agree with you. For a minor version upgrade maybe, too. But why would I want less bugfixes for

To me the question is, if it's still a bug once the original bug in 3.0.2 got fixed. I'd argue no, you might argue yes. I think auto-upgrades of Docker are totally fine if it makes the lives of Docker devs easier and they can conc

Google Chrome has been using auto upgrades for years and I haven't heard any complains about that. I'd argue it's also a really important tool in a dev's toolkit.

But still, if there was no bug in 3.0.2, people wouldn't have tried to downgrade to 3.0.1 again. So the bug was not in 3.0.0, nor in 3.0.1, but only in 3.0.2.

And still, it's really cheap if you consider the amount of work you have to put into configuring other products like VS Code where you end up with an inferior experience. I think it pays off.

Not having to ship your own client to every platform is the biggest selling point of web apps (or cloud apps). The border between app and client shifted to more low-level, but also more capable interfaces: HTTP, HTML, CSS, JS rather than si

I think we are doing pretty well with increasing the number of SSGs even without a meta SSGG. But I guess there are still more blogs around than SSGs, so there's still potential for incrementing that counter.

I'm a software developer and a user of package managers. A package manager that allows me to only have one version of a software package installed will inevitably get in my way if I need two programs that need different, incompatible v

Exactly. When you want to install one of those fast-paced pieces of software on your system, you're often dissatisfied with the old version coming with your OS anyway.

Yes, this indeed looks like laziness of the developers to me. When the app was developed, JavaFX came pre-packaged with the JDK/JRE, so they still rely on it. Today, it should perhaps just be a regular dependency of your app and be par
