The linear-feedback shift register method is also used for procedurally generating content in e.g. demos. Funny to see this implemented in hardware and it would be interesting to know when this trick was used firstly.

To you and all the other sibling comments: Thanks a lot! Exactly what I have been looking for! With regard to Vaex, I would really be interested in an independent benchmark comparing it to dask, spark, data.table etc. However, I have seen i

Does anybody here know dataframe systems that are able to handle file sizes bigger than the available RAM? Is polars able to handle this? I am only aware of disk.frame (diskframe.com), but don't know how well it performs.

I don't understand the advantage of the assign-method in the article you have linked to. If I would like to alter data in a column of a large dataframe, why should I use the assign-method (and copy data) instead of the mentioned loc-me

Seriously, which German university (not "FH") doesn't teach analysis and linear algebra in the first terms? I am really wondering.

> But earning 2x inflation rate is pretty decent for a low-risk investment. Maybe you mean this anyway, but your statement could be misunderstood: One doesn't earn twice the inflation rate. It is multiplied by two to give an annual

Just for comparison: For commuting 40km to a city in Germany including public transport in the city, I have to pay around 1.800,- EUR per year. It is expected that the Austrian 'Klimaticket' will include also the public transport

Yes, the difference is just that one has Greek roots and the other one comes from the Latin version of the Greek word.

As a side note, Gerhard Gentzen (who studied under von Neumann) was in the army from '39 to '41. It is a real pity that he was a Nazi and didn't leave Germany before the war.

There is actually a fascinating thesis by Yipeng Huang ("Hybrid Analog-Digital Co-Processing for Scientific Computation") that discusses toy models (i.e. Black-Scholes and variants). As usual, you have a Wiener process and thus ne

I have always believed that Hofstadter's (or FARG's) models like copycat or metacat go much further in the direction of AI than any neural network. The results and advances of neural networks in the past decade are impressive, but
