Very clever technique! It seems more true to letterforms than SDF. Seems like it might need more texture bandwidth/dependent reads than SDF, but less texture memory as a whole? I've been looking at different text rendering methods

Yeah. I do wind mine, but I leave a length of loose cable first to avoid applying tension where the cable enters the brick. I believe the fraying happens when people pull laterally on the strain relief. (It's still Apple's fault,

So let see if I understand this--if as a test subject your task is to perceive two different criteria in the same scene concurrently, performance drops off dramatically? Sounds about right. Take video games. Whenever I've tried one of

Reminds me of a classic generalization: Normal people apply tact to what they say; nerds apply tact to what they hear. (Robust people ask why not both?)

That's a good insight! At one point last year I found myself in the trap of playing 'delta golf', to the extent that I would leave extra {...} blocks around if it meant not having to de-dent a dozen statements. It was definit

Very thoughtful writing here about how to navigate "information space" and how people cope with a ridiculously fast-moving world. In navigating this nauseating landscape, we need fixed points that do not exist. This points to a s

This echoes the way unums work in "The End of Error". (Recommended read by the way.) Good way of thinking about ranges.

Was it an indicator of the quality of the comments section? Looks like the percentages appeared, then HN went down briefly (server restart, sorry @dang), and now the percentages are gone.

Whoa, finally! I've been oddly attached to Keccak's story over the years ever since it won the contest. Glad to see SHA-3 finished. Did NIST make any changes to the algorithm since? From what I can tell it looks like they only mad

If you're going to monologue, I'll take a blog post over a speech any day. But if we need to work out details, let's get conference chairs. If we're planning a party, online will do. Once we're hanging out, we'

Whoa, I gotta check out your scene! (Earlier this summer I was contemplating the notion of a VR startup in Calgary, partly yeah because of the winter factor :) guess I should switch the idea to Winnipeg.)

I can't believe there's so much lag in conscious experience! (I guess that explains the "~100ms for perceived instant response" ui guideline?) Oh! I see what you're saying. What a crazy neat way to think about consc

Yeah, you more or less can't change struct layout after IR (maybe unless you had a no-aliasing no-FFI guarantee... safe Rust?) But you can encode new or different instructions and add new optimizations.

This is a huge surprise! I had been under the assumption that asynchronous semantic edits were the only true way forward. Synchronous large-scale edits?! If you can make it work, even only half of the time... that is an enormous productivit

IR output is too cool. It's really nice of LLVM to let you use arbitrary strings in identifiers, like %"2.core::fmt::rt::v1::Position" %"2.core::option::Option<&'static [core::fmt::rt::v1::Argument]>

It takes a long time and many round trips to establish an SSH connection. You can keep a shared connection open as a workaround. But mobile devices (laptops included) don't persist connections, because batteries. Maybe you could do it
