This sort of event is shameful and near-indefensible but not new. If you're a foreign grad student in the US, be aware that this sort of thing happens all the time, and even trivial visa issues take a long time to resolve.

IIRC the netflix prize is about making predictions for individual users based on their history & interests, which is orders of magnitude harder than making a prediction for the average over all users, which is all that you need for box

You misread me. I said the first sentence doesn't add to or change the meaning of the second. You're saying the second does change the first. If he wanted to make your point unambiguously, he could/should have left off the first sentence.

If we're going to pick nits, it would illustrate the "Weak" LLN, not the Strong LLN. The Strong LLN still holds here, but you'd need to plot the sample paths to illustrate it.
