Data scientists do not pull that kind of bonus. Today many of them get paid less than the data engineers do.

Np. There is a common trend in the industry where a company hires on a data scientist, doesn't know the data prerequisites (specifically labeled data), the data scientist struggles, after a while the company fires the data scientist.

I would be cautious about that. I've worked in the startup space for over 10 years now as a data scientist, often the first one hired on, working on the pipes. From my experience, there are two types of data scientists who work who do

This was addressed in the previous comment >On the quant side, *unlike on the data science side*, Vision scientist is on the data science side. You're not dealing with monetary values where floating point error compounds on itself

It sucks being that guy because everyone else ends up hating you. Depending on the work environment it's not a stretch to see software engineers complaining to management, sometimes going as far to create rumors to get the jr data scie

Back in the day (3 years ago and earlier) at every company I was at we used the term 'productionization' to describe someone making a model aka a proof of concept, and then someone else, a machine learning engineer or some kind of

If they're using a dynamically typed language to do monetary calculations, it's not going to be ideal. Researchers do not need to have deep programming experience, but they have to be comfortable enough to use an environment that

Another way to think about inelastic is it is relative, not absolute. Textbooks, teachers, and professors, love to use gas as an example of an inelastic product when teaching the topic. However, if gas hit $100 a gallon you better believe

What you're talking about is price elasticity, which is not the same thing. Here, I'll paste in a definition of inelastic: Inelastic is an economic term referring to the static quantity of a good or service when its price changes

It has to do with size. On one end of the spectrum, there is unions which represent just a single company. On the other end of the spectrum there are governments that represent the consumers (and workers in theory) of an entire country. I

Hitler called his party socialist too. I'm not sure if anyone fell for it in the US then and it's really a more 1940s type corruption. I'm probably saying the obvious but fun fact: These communist and fascist countries calle

What you quoted is about people taking the only housing they can afford. Keep in mind low income households are 44% of the US. 44% of the country can only afford the cheapest rent. When half of the country has a flat limit, it restricts

It's a complex problem. Supply and demand works in some housing markets and not others. Some markets are non-competitive so supply and demand doesn't quite work. This is not because land is a limited resource, but travel times

This reminds me of when my great grandfather would talk about socialism. I believe in the 1950s the terminology got corrupted, or maybe he was always using some off shoot version of the terminology. What the socialism he and many proteste

lol. That has to do with comments like, "Wow, look at that comment's downvotes!" not asking about guidelines in relation to votes. Of course, there is room for interpretation on this one.

That's refreshing to hear. I'm not pro manipulative speech (and manipulative news), but in the US free speech is seen as a very strong positive culturally, regardless where you are on the political spectrum.

Half of the US has been told to not follow the news. Hacker News is a news site so I imagine little to no one on the Trump train is here.

As a data scientist, I feel this. Intel and AMD don't own an OS or an app store, and you might be surprised how hard it is to get good data. Data is the new gold. If a company that can corner a piece of the market, they can collect

My guess is it had to do with limitations tied to the x86_64 instruction set. It doesn't matter how much modifications you do, if you don't start with a good foundation, you're going to be limited to that foundation.
