So happy to see the love for Griffith’s Intro to Electrodynamics. I know it gets dinged for not being sufficiently rigorous, but I’ve never read another math or science textbook that did as good a job of getting a beginner to truly understa

Respectfully, aside from whether or note the tone of the piece is or is not justifiable, I think your comment misses the point, which is that there is injustice in people (or a system) who unfairly shunt work off to you that they should rig

Your mileage may definitely vary. In 20+ years, I’ve had four incidents of receiving obviously counterfeit goods; no idea if it has happened more often than that and I was just unaware.

Haha… Amazon, you say? You mean the large money laundering operation, putting third party counterfeit goods in the same warehouse bins as legitimate goods from legitimate suppliers, so that as a consumer you never know if you’re going to ge

I got bad news for some of the folks in this thread: just about _everyone_ can be replaced with two junior devs and a Keurig.

Indeed. Acquisitions are often great for the founders, sometimes ok for shareholders, and usually a disaster for employees and customers.

Strongly agree. “Why are academic papers always written in such mumbo jumbo?” is the same complaint as “Why are contracts written in such legalese?”, which is a manifestation of “I’m smart and I don’t get this, so the author is dumb for not

One of the many consequences of global warming is going to be a reckoning of trying to support large cities in areas that fundamentally cannot sustain them. Las Vegas, Phoenix, even Southern California do not really have any business existi

Go ahead and downvote me all to hell, but the comments in this thread from bike enthusiasts sound like Trump apologists - they are alike in their adamant refusal to acknowledge reality. Do you think any amount or quality of bike infrastruct

We don’t have enough long-term research these days. I wish Bret Victor well and am looking forward to future innovations from him and his crew.

The biggest problem I ran into was that ORBs from different manufacturers just didn’t play nice with one another. And then SOAP and Enterprise Service Bus repeated the whole damn thing.

I’m 51 and had this conversation too many times to indulge this. All I can say is that I wish you luck if you or your loved ones ever have a serious medical issue in the US. And you may be lucky. Or you may spend years on telephone calls tr

At least in the US, I would argue your reply is not totally correct. The US has a long history of not really knowing if it wants prison to be punishment, rehabilitation, or both.

It’s a good question. I took it as an Extension student working on a degree, but if you made yourself do the assignments, you’d have much the same experience. The only thing you’d miss are sections with a TA, which is valuable, but I think

Alan Kay once pointed out something along the line that when excitement exceeds knowledge you get fashion. For 10 years I’ve been in and around languages that were declared dead by the HN crowd because there wasn’t enough new hype around it
