I have generally found simple text files to be most effective in actually solving problems. The moment it moves to richer formats, some amount of mental bandwidth is taken up by the presentation aspect.

In many software companies I have seen powerpoints replace design documents and technical solutions. The most recent case I came across was in a company which needed to improve product quality and reduce testing time. As an engineer, to me

Scala compiler does self-tail calls so in theory Java compiler should be able to do it. But IIUC doing tail calls between functions is not possible (or at least not worth the effort) on the JVM.

Thats the reason I tend to avoid tech stocks. Its not possible to say if a product will work. Yahoo was doing so well till Google came along. I wouldn't invest in Google though (for the same reason) even though its a great company and I lov

By trading do you mean investment (as in long term buy-and-hold, 5-10years)? The strategy is sound (and have a similar approach) but it makes sense only for a buy-and-hold approach. For the short term the quality of the company product does

That sounds too silly to be true. Especially with OpenJDK and other implementation around. But one can never tell how businesses work :)

That particular project (simulation) required a lot of bit twiddling and working with data of various sizes 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit. So having the specific types nailed at compile time helped. Lack of unsigned data on the JVM was a pain thoug

I tend to agree most of the post apart from "1. I think Clojure is much simpler". I am not saying that Scala is simpler, just that its a matter of preference. After spending a fair amount of time using both languages (5-6 months each) IMO o

I use Python as my primary scripting language but I spent some time looking at Perl 6 in the context of Parrot and it really has a lot of good ideas that post mentions: - multi-methods - rules (builtin parsing capability) - macros

I once moved a project from ClearCase to CVS because the performance of our ClearCase setup was _really_ eating into our time. I didn't have any major complaints from SVN as well. Some reasons I moved to bzr are: - repository backups are f

Irrespective of what Torvald says, I would probably choose svn over tarballs. But you should look also at bzr and hg. I don't think they integrate with Visual Studio but have good guis.

git already has this in core and bzr has a rebase plugin[1]. I think this problem has been solved for quite some time now :) [1] http://doc.bazaar.canonical.com/plugins/en/rebase-plugin.htm...

This is my pet peeve with all DVCSes. I tried this with bzr, hg and git and all fail. Not sure if any other DVCSes handle it. I don't see it happening anytime soon as long as it justified using "its _source_ control". There are programming

I am just wondering how involved Gosling is in JDK (in terms of roadmap, new features and such) now a days ... or is it primarily driven by the community?
