I'm betting that it can be evidence against anyone not informed enough to call them on it. And let's not forget that IP address evidence assumes, probably among other things, 1) No Tor 2) No Proxy (chains) 3) No one else under the same NAT

I think if the article actually contained anything like 'Mr. Moot can you please verify that this hentai tentacle rape scene is in line with the 4chan rules', it would have been, while still not particularly relevant HN material, actually e

I was about to ask why this is on HN, but really why is it anywhere except at the bottom of a stack of court proceedings? I have a hard time imagining anyone reading through this and not wanting those 10 minutes back.

I haven't tried it, but the first thing that comes to mind is that your skepticism is likely to have a causal influence on it's efficacy.

The exact nature of a hypnotic state is widely debated. But hypnosis being hogwash and hypnosis working for some are not mutually exclusive hypotheses. The test shows that there were differences of some kind between hypnotized and non hypno

Seems like spammers have done this (convincingly enough for at least some users). I don't have some foolproof method from telling a spambot from a spammer using copy/paste everywhere, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised.

The point is sort of that they're taking ideas from languages like Java and actually using them for OS/system code. You're right, it's all old hat for programming languages, but using it for the OS itself (usually done in C or assembler) is

Really though, the math is pretty unsurprising isn't it? Optimum sleep time is usually considered 7 or 8 hours, we'll say 7. If you sleep 4 hours a night for 5 nights, you wind up 15 hours short. Why would one expect to make up for that wit

I'm a developer who sometimes gets stuck with design work for websites. Having no design training whatsoever, I find that minimalism is the form in which I will embarrass myself the least, and the one which requires the least amount of phot

And what if the advice is "Here, drink this"? You're correct that if we know with high certainty whether the info is true, the source becomes irrelevant (and the higher the certainty, the less weight the source's credibility carries). But i

Really? You would say it's irrational for me to be less skeptical of the WSJ than of timecube.com? I have to doubt my father's advice equally as much as I would doubt that of a psychopath? I'd just say be willing to update your skepticism a

It's sort of however you want to look at it. The post is suggesting it's "because of" not "despite" the ugliness. I take the above comment to mean that these sites could perhaps be even more successful if designed more aesthetically. Dunno

I've often wondered just how many people have ever used the "add to home screen" button, or even really noticed it. I assumed for a long time that the "+" icon just added a bookmark to mobile Safari. Note that HN is clearly not a good sampl

Smugness doesn't constitute an argument. For any statement you make, I can respond "Ha, I knew you'd say that, how naive and predictable!" I can also add "I perfectly understand your position" despite giving no one any reason to believe thi
