$3 million per year for a business of that size doesn't sound too obscene. DHH is forgetting that electricity, cooling, fault-tolerance are also expensive, the price of "insanely powerful iron you can buy from Dell" is not t

This is an incredibly misleading use of graph axes. The baseline should be 200000 ppm, but a change of 500 wouldn't be noticeable. So they just show the change from a recent year, which lets them baseline at zero.

The critical path of "install more solar panels" is not at all gated by the cost of solar panels these days. It is the electrical work (both within in the home, and "interconnect") that is the expensive bottleneck. (( al

There are quite a few different complaints here. The annual cadence is both too frequent, and too infrequent. The (toxic) "stack-rank and fire 10%" is mentioned as well. But, regarding the title: performance reviews are good and

This seems to be "hype-based design". Other than the potential for good PR, I'm not sure why lignin-based materials would be any improvement. And the "charged in as little as 8 minutes" appears to be ... one of tho

The situation in Haiti appears to be very troubled. Clearly the government is barely functioning. However, the journalistic coverage is very minimal. This is partly because of the repeated violent attacks on journalists, and partly becaus

The point is that a "unit" could not possibly have been a $16 bag of coffee, if they were getting paid $41 per unit. The story smells fake to me. The most charitable interpretation is that they were misled by their "food bro

Also, the so-called explanations for unexpected rankings seem very much like "fishing for an plausible-sounding explanation", when "the system is flawed" is actually the more plausible explanation. (note https:/&#

The opening anecdote demonstrates a lack of understanding of how to guess on game shows. Mick Jagger is a perfectly reasonable guess for "An old person whose name sounds like Micklewhite".

In what sense is it a bad thing that the government can see who drove to the scene of a crime? Especially when, to prevent abuse or mistakes, that isn't sufficient on its own to justify police action?

Calling it "controversial" is a way of whitewashing that it would get you kicked out of any poker game I have ever attended. Possibly you could get away with it at a shady home game where the other players know it is a sign you ar

An excellent example of the hacker-ethos failing. A decade ago, you could create a reasonable app in a month and make money. Now, the low-hanging fruit is gone. This app would get you kicked out of any poker-game I have ever been to, is ov

I'd rather not give a thorough list, for obvious reasons. I will note one example, they note "Long-haul aviation does not currently have a generally accepted path to electrification", but include it on the list anyway.
