Because of the ignorance of the police you need to be nuts to run a Tor exit node. I don't much see the point in Tor anyhow, you want to be anonymous for some reason just use an unsecured WIFI AP or a proxy in another country, easy enough

It's a list of twitter users sorted by follower count. Therefore it just reinforces the existing popular users and doesn't expose you to interesting and new people. Stupid-wank-fest.

Beijing has gotten quite a bit more expensive in the couple years that I've been there. On top of that the currency exchange rate has gotten considerably worse. Probably in total a 25% difference since I arrived in 2006. Most people readi

The bigger problem with the Chinese Internet is that it's just slow. Foreign links to the Internet are often congested and will slow down incredibly at times. It sucks. The Great firewall is mostly just a pain in the ass. However, it's e

Worst case scenario? Your numbers seem a bit wrong. $60/hr is incredibly optimistic as is $400/mo in expenses. Think more like $10-15/hr as an english teacher and $700-$1200/mo in expenses as a base. You will not be able to support you

Beijing is not just polluted, it's absurdly polluted. Think taking on a pack a day habit and that's nearly the long term impact on your health. Not good. $60/hr seems quite optimistic to me. I have never taught english but the teachers

In China without some Chinese the basics such as transportation, food and shelter are a real pain. If you're going to spend any great amount of time in China you must learn Chinese, especially if you live outside of Shanghai and Beijing.

This is indeed true. There's nothing to fear in China, unless you're a total idiot. You're probably safer here than in the US.

I'm a westerner working in China for years and hiring computer science graduates from the top tier universities. The quality of their education is shockingly poor. The Chinese education system is destructive and collectivist, promoting co

You really have no clue. This poor kid probably doesn't have the money for a train trip to Shanghai much less to explore the world. He has no ability to work other places inside China and nobody would hire him where he'd make any money

China doesn't do this. In a dozen times crossing the Chinese border the guards have never even spoken to me. You also have a cool button system at the stand which you can rate your experience with the border guard.

Really stupid article. Facebook Chat on the iPhone will kill SMS? What's the iPhone global penetration rate? 1%? So I'll be able to chat with 1% of my friends assuming they all arrange to run the iPhone Facebook app at the same time a

They're also being quite generous when they say that 300M Chinese read and write English. In my experience (Canadian living in China) it's got to be way less than that who are actually capable in some rudimentary way. I wouldn't expect a

Your pinyin is correct: zhen de! (Really! 真的!) Chinese does indeed give you a new view of the superfluous nature of many English words. Chinese is like caveman English: "I want beer. Bring more." type stuff. Fun. Still, English is a mor

China is undergoing incredible growth mainly due to urbanization. It is moving towards 60-70% of the people living in cities from around 40-50% now. It's about half way along the process right now and will complete in ~15 years bringing
