I'm surprised at all of the drama surrounding Red Hat's decisions. Red Hat is a for-profit company and not a charity. They (Red Hat) don't make any claims of offering RHEL for free to the whole world. If you want that, Canoni

Pardon my ignorance here. Isn't rubber (used in tires) different from plastics? Honest question. I've always thought of them as being different things. Not that I want micro-rubber particles in my lungs either.

Ah, the old 'do as I say, not as I do' routine! Leading by example!

Not specifically addressing your question, but when you get to the point of wanting to start doing some experiments you may find that 'fio' [1] is very handy. [1] https://github.com/axboe/fio

Even for a 9-0 ruling? I honestly don't know, but historically there's usually at least 1 dissent for something that's controversial.

That's awesome! Since you mention data analytics and being able to get to people quickly, have a look at 'set covering problem' for ways to find optimal solutions.

That's great! I was hoping that something similar would happen where I live. I think it has decreased, but still too much.

Very true! A few years ago my brother-in-law died unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 53. This event was a real eye opener for me. It made me realize that my 'one of these days I'd like to...' plans have an expiration date

This would be me if I could figure out a way to make it happen. A good friend of mine has a tiny farm but he is in poor health. I go out to his farm fairly often to help him. I absolutely love it (being outdoors and the peacefulness).

That's true! I think the idea is more along the lines of 'do it on your own terms'.

A lot of wisdom here! I'm in my mid 50s and sometimes have lower back trouble. If I thought my lower back could take it, I would seriously consider leaving software engineering and switch to a trade.

I routinely go out and pick up trash along some of the nearby streets in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, my setup is not nearly as impressive. It's sad to see the amount of trash that people throw. Beer cans, drink cups, cigarette butt

One is going over the air and the other was going over copper lines. I don't know if that makes a huge difference, but I suspect it makes some difference (especially in inclement weather).

Agreed! It reminds me of the days when we had POTS for telephone service. It was great to have when there was an extended power outage.

It is possible to have an AM radio that's not inside a car! Many homes have portable radios that are battery operated. Especially in areas that are prone to very severe weather.

This is a stunning achievement from a technical point of view. Bravo! Is there any company that still owns the intellectual property of Lotus (and care about stuff like this)? I always liked Lotus 1-2-3. It was the first spreadsheet I ever

Probably the single purchase that's had the greatest impact for me was my Bose noise-cancelling headphones. That was quite a while back, as they're the QC-15. However, they still work great and I still use them often.

Dumb question for those of you familiar with coding Win API these days -- can you easily build 64-bit Windows applications using Win32 API? I did a little Win32 C coding many years ago, but that was long before 64-bit Windows hit the scene.
