Eh I feel as though you relinquished the channel the second you essentially shut it down. Why would freenode or any IRC server want to just keep a channel that is unused except to advertise a different server? I would understand more if it

It sounds pretty reasonable to be honest, youre allowed to share the code and theres no legal reprocussions for doing so but the company should be able to just stop sending you stuff if you do?

Forgive my ignorance on the subject but if it's not government mandated then what's stopping them from going bankrupt and not respecting the guarantee? If they set aside no money to keep the promise then they physically cannot do

You can also set it in JS still a meta tag and image I guess though. It's how some sites do the notification badge thing that is animated.
