Msgpack is a different encoding, not quite the same as compression. What happens if you do both?

The ordering property is a side effect of the new and more cpu/memory efficient data structure. It would be very surprising to say no to a 2x performance jump to avoid the (sometimes useful) ordering.

It takes light 1 ns to travel 30 cm (i.e. 1 standard body part / foot). So getting much faster must mean getting closer. I reckon it is only feasible if the RAM crawls into the CPU.

Pandas and numpy (which all things data science depend on) require compilation of C/C++ code which comes in addition to the download/install steps. Wheel files can contain precompiled .so files.

The matrix algebra and array manipulation is written in C++. The statistical analysis is done in R, potentially using multiple different matrix algebra routines. For example. I have no idea why you would not use R (or python) «at the top»,

Not really true. If the particular computer you’re running the code on is warm due to weather conditions, which affects clock frequency, it doesn’t tell you anything about the performance of your code.

It’s good to know about turbo boost when measuring cpu bound code. When the cpu gets hot, the clock drops, sometimes by a large factor. When it’s cooler and the OS wants to run code, the clock goes back up. This can be disabled in BIOS to g

In my experience, this is partly true but in general it’s hard to get it to work well and in the end zsh is more slick. Xonsh is another shell that also has better completion than bash and with even less effort. (It’s not as stable though..

Been there done that. One great feature I ran across was that the intel compiler has a #pragma incantation that enables many checks on a per-file basis. This lets you create new code and selectively fix old code without these obvious defect

Seconded. We have several levels of dev/test/production cloud services, including backends on cloud providers etc. It’s great to have one container for each group of services!

Why not bash? It’s in most places, even if POSIX is even more general. And it does add some nice scripting features. I use zsh for interactive and bash for scripts for the same reasons as you, though.

I highly recommend this site. It’s very nitpicky, and that’s the only way to write somewhat robust shell scripts. https://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashGuide

I used to symlink and have a simple dotfiles repo, but this forces you to have exactly identical rc files. Different computers simply need different setups, so I started with ansible and a few playbooks running locally.
