Then host your own instance. Your definition of "centralized" as "optionally requiring any trust at all" is pretty broad, and sweeps up even email.

Only if you started programming in Go. I've never in my life heard of another project that by default seeds with 0. That's insane. EDIT: Okay, C and a bunch of other languages I don't use. Keep the roasts coming, guys. :D

Oh, you can still have fun. Just run something that's not a a full DE. My Sway setup is super stable now, but only after an ungodly amount of tinkering. :D

Yeah, didn't want to sound like a shill, but Dx0 is so good I run it in a virtual machine on my Linux box. It's "Deep Prime" noise reduction thing is what I was talking about. There are others, even some stand alone, but

I'd argue it's wide suburban streets that encourage high speed driving. The road I live on is not wide enough for two cars to pass each other if there are also cars parked on each side, and driving even 20mph feels way too fast. B

I've got an Olympus M43 camera, which has an image sensor that's both significantly smaller than full frame, and significantly larger than a phone. I've found that I can do absolutely amazing things to the RAW image later. Th

I just discovered Chezmoi last week. For years I thought I was fine manually symlinking into a repo. Boy was I wrong! Thank you for the wonderful project.

You have a very odd definition of a general purpose language. All the functional ones are out, because immutability doesn’t let you mutate through any pointer.

I’ve done some stuff in C and C++, and Rust is the one that made sense and I stuck with. It’s by far the easiest systems language I’ve ever used. Also, this seems like a classic “Arch, btw” sentiment. Where you hear it over and over and ove

They do say it’s more of a port than a rewrite. They aren’t trying to do everything a new way this time around. That’s usually the downfall of a rewrite. I’ve done these kinds of ports before. After you get used to it, you can almost shut y

With Linux, the word "immutable" (in the context of a file system) doesn't ever actually mean it can't be changed. Here's it explained better than I ever could: https://blog.verbum.org/2020/08&#

Anyone know how the immutability is handled? I've seen OSTree, btrfs snapshots, and partition swapping in the wild; very interested to know the take here.

I just bought a used laptop on impulse last week, and it still has no home. It's driving me nuts. It's sitting next to me right now. And because it's pre-usb-c, the charger needs a home too. I have about 30 large bins in the

Because that is _very_ latency sensitive, not throughput sensitive.

If reference counting was faster, Java would do it. It’s better for UIs and lower latency, but a modern, generational GC can beat C in throughput (because allocations get a lot faster).

I've been successfully using their iMessage bridge for my personal server for about a year now. It's very nice to use iMessage on my Linux machines, since that's the chat network everyone around me has decided to use.

The implication that riding a bike puts you at higher risk of head injury than any other moderate activity is precisely what I take issue with. I'd bet good money that showering, walking up stairs, and even driving a car are all at lea

Unless you go absolutely ham with smart pointers (which everyone knows not to do if you care about performance), C++ isn’t really a reference counting language. I wouldn’t call RAII “reference counting”. I mean, I guess, but it’s the progra

I don't know if you can write high-throughput systems with 100% reference counted GC. Swift is targeted at UI work pretty hard.

Swift is great because it's the only alternative to Objective C. I don't really think anyone is clamoring for it to move into non-Apple domains.

This is all well and good, but for me, it's not SMS. No one uses SMS. It's iMessage. And iMessage is absolutely more secure than Telegram, and probably even Whatsapp, so all these arguments fall flat for me. Personally, I hate iMe

I bought a used Dell office PC from FreeGeek for about 100 bucks, then installed Proxmox on it with Portainer. Now I've got a place to put all my crap that isn't AWS, which is not only easier, but faster, and way cheaper.
