This is the announcement post, which is pretty old by now. Lots of great things have happened since, and it’s worth a look! This is my go-to distro when I build a computer for family. It’s bullet proof, practical, and everything auto updat

Nice! What I really want, though, is a local API! I can use a starlark script to grab entity states from my local Home Assistant super easy... but then I have to cUrl them up to a Tidbyt server somewhere, only to have it sent right back int

Eh, Tidbyt is cheaper, easier to set up, and looks nicer: https://github.com/pkulak/tidbyt It ended up working great!

I still have a Google Home in the kitchen, but what I really want it to display is data from my weather station, transit info, the time, etc. I can't control that damn thing at all. I've got a TidByt coming today, which I have hig

I'm surprised it's only 30%. Even a COP of 3, which is pretty modest for a modern heat pump, would be 60% savings (abouts, not sure if my math is right).

I'm about 18 months in as well and feel like I don't know crap. I just can't memorize thousands of new words. I honestly have no idea how anyone is bilingual.

Last I tried this it required setting up an SSH agent to actually push anything… and I was just too lazy.

Driving is so dangerous and difficult that we have an entire licensing system set up, but we’ve also made it necessary to live, so we can’t deny anyone a license and we can’t do anything that requires drivers to learn anything new, because

Yeah, not to be totally insensitive, but 45,000 Americans died on our roads last year and basically no one has even a single fuck to give about it. For some reason all we ever complain about is the only safe transportation system we have.

Yes, it’s so silly to worry about what we’re doing to the planet. Absolutely ridiculous to suggest any solutions that may impact rich people’s hedonism in any way. This may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.

I can never find anything. You have to walk every isle in the whole store. And that’s after you make it through 400 yards of parking lot expressly designed to get you run over by an F350. Then you get to the checkout (after picking the 20-m

I really wanted this to go more into how the poison works, and contrast it with previous solutions, maybe talk about those as well. If the roaches no longer like sweet, can we flavor it like something else? Instead it was talking about how

I almost pulled the trigger on the Z10, then got worried I’d just brick it and backed out. Now it’s not even available. Hopefully there will be another no-solder option soon.

Java too. Rust is the only language I’ve used where “immutable” means everything through the whole reference tree is also immutable. Well, only language that allows mutation at all.

Fun! I’m always on the lookout for a new scripting language. I hate Bash, and Python just isn’t my style, even though it’s currently my default. Something like Kotlin would be my dream, but that’s still pretty hard to use for quick scripts.

For sure. Don’t use it. But some of us find it enjoyable to write automation scripts and get our homes behaving exactly how we want. Might I suggest you refrain from shitting on some one else’s hobby just because it’s not for you? I’m sure

I’d love to see someone try to spy on my Zigbee and Z-Wave networks as they communicate with my self hosted Home Assistant instance.

And serializable transactions fail all the time. You have to always code so that re-running them is trivial and expected. 99% of the queries I write are fine at the lowest transaction level, and that saves me and the DB lots of time.

Wow, I had no idea there was even demand for this kinda thing. I guess I assumed all setups were like my MQTT server that takes events from a few Zigbee devices every few minutes.

I’m on a TOU plan that makes energy from 5-9 4 times as expensive. Which means I charge my car, heat my water, and even heat/cool my house outside of 5-9. All you need to do is offer incentives and it’ll happen.

I don’t like hooking my car up to my phone. And I generally like in-car nav. Google Maps has ads, bugs me to report accidents, routes through neighborhoods to save 30 seconds, and won’t show up in a HUD or binnacle. All I want is a good way
