I have seen so many content creators go full time and create awesome work because Patreon gives them a format to incentivize their followers to pay them. The economics are beautiful — turns out just 1,000 people (a pittance on internet mass

fantastic book about media manipulation. Very helpful in putting any type of media you see (reddit or otherwise) in perspective, and identifying where it is vulnerable to manipulation (which, on the internet, is virtually everywhere).

Sentiment analysis based on media is going to make you even more vulnerable to black swans. Black swans come from our collective blind spot -- if the media is reporting it (with a correct sentiment), it's by definition not on our blind

Yeah, great point about the inductive reasoning. I haven't thought about that aspect too much, although I guess I would call this line of reasoning inductive: "this globalization sure is impacting people's livelihoods, and ca

Taleb addresses this too. Of course somebody DID predict it. I don't know if that means the event is, in general, "predictable." If you put 1 million people in a room and told them to randomly guess what events would occur ne

To clarify, by "predict" I mean "to be reasonably sure of the outcome before it happens". I can assign logical reasons for Uber to declare bankruptcy tomorrow, but I would definitely not predict it.

I don't like the use of the word "predictable". I would qualify this populist uprising as a Black Swan[0], and as Taleb describes in his book, one of the common reactions to a black swan is to rationalize it's obvious pr

Most of the people I know aren't swayed by the "tough on crime" narrative. Certainly not me. But then again, I live in a techno-liberal-intellectual bubble. I believe this "punish those who do wrong" mentality (whic

the challenge is that literally nobody is incentivized to make changes to this system. the situation is really bad for politicians. A politican voting to reform a clearly broken prison system faces tons of risks to their career. Even one wr

isn't it always "too late"? The fired employee would have to have a long pattern of problems. With the benefit of hindsight you'd know that you should have fired them after the first 5 or 10 problems.

if this disgusts you for moral/guilt reasons there is a good solution. Eat less meat! You don't have to go full vegan. I think people employ black and white thinking about this -- either I eat all meat or I become vegetarian/
