We probably are not yet able to tell if we can simulate a brain fully, with something we call a computer nowadays. If we can, then indeed consciousness comes from the collective function of individual cells. But maybe there's more to t

I call it keeping an open mind and try to be empathetic, but it does feel like sailing in the wind at times. I think people in general tend to avoid that kind of uncertainty in their life.

The video is amazing if you're a coder and might need to use excel at some point (access columns by name ?! sign me up!). However, what I love about excel is to see what it enables people without formal programming training to do with

The paradox of tolerance [1] is a PITA. At the end of the day a santa hat is no big deal, but by the logic of "even a single person being offended is one too many", taken to the extreme, all that is left is the lowest common denom

It is still vastly different to paste a command you can inspect visually when copying than an unknown command injected imperceptibly.

The jeweler could be able to mark his bar as destroyed in the chain, perhaps registering the rings in a separate chain? That way, if every entity that handles or processes gold did the same, you could have a good idea of where each piece of

Would it be feasible to make signed gold bars, verifiable with some kind of public key? Or by inserting all gold bars and their journey on a (perhaps blockchain-like) database verifiable by anyone?

In the same vein, I use https://tabliss.io/ for the simple fact it requires minimal permissions and works on firefox. The reason I started using something like this is because the "top sites" I visit is not someth

I am under the impression that low code platforms thrive because you need less skilled people to work with them, and still are able to build your app/whatever. Yes it's still better to have skilled engineers, but they're expe

I get where they are coming from, but I've never seen this kind of strategy work. If someone wants to keep listening to their songs for free they will find a way to do it, possibly with a different vendor. There's also the possibi

I agree with the post, but it should be noted that there's a big difference between Chromium -- an open source project -- and IE 6 being the de-facto browser engine on the web.

Referendums should be reserved to societal/moral issues (gay marriage, etc.). Otherwise, let's have a referendum asking the people if they want to keep paying taxes -- that should work well. Quite extreme, I know. My point is that

Yep, but you can "buy" HA from any DB provider (Amazon RDS, compose, etc.) until you're big enough to dedicate resources to solve that particular problem. My comment doesn't necessarily contradict the article. I only mea

Well, it generally fits until it doesn't, and that's OK. If your scale is small enough, fiddling with specialized solutions is just premature optimization. PostgreSQL will take you a long way before you need to look somewhere else

From our experience, that consent screen is wrong under the GDPR. It asks for permission for 3 things, and while the first 2 could arguably be necessary for the "service", the third one (updates and promotions) clearly isn't.

Regarding backups, I think the answer might be: "keep the backups only as long as you need". Is it really reasonable for an active site to keep backups older than a couple of months? A year?

Thank you for the keywords, that actually makes some sense. I guess the crux of the question is in ambiguous terms like "personal freedoms", etc. that the regulation says should be weighted against "Legitimate Interest"

Could you elaborate on GDPR being opt-out? The main point I keep reading about seems to be unambiguous separate consent for every use you use any piece of data for. (on mobile, but I’ll come back with references if needed)

I actually think conflating cryptocurrency with not paying taxes may does not help anyone in the discussion. Banking fees, sure. But taxes? That's a whole ideological discussion not even closely related to crypto.

Even with all the fancy ML stuff, the HDR "glow" is still clearly visible on most of these photos. On the plus side, the co-processor seems programmable, which means quality can improve without the need to upgrade the hardware.

I had no problem running a cross-cloud cluster with rancher 1.x. You simply have to make sure the IPSec ports are open between hosts for the overlay network.

Does docker need anything special for GPU instances? As far as I know, rancher 1.X simply interacts with the docker agent running on whatever hardware you provide (cloud or otherwise).

When your application grows, eventually you need to de-normalize data if you want to keep having reasonable performance for some operations. You can reach a point where it's not feasible to have everything done by joins. EDIT: I mean

The beauty of it is that ARKit also requires somewhat specialized hardware. But since apple controls the hardware as well, they can pull it off much faster than the android eco-system ever will. They solve the chicken and egg problem, havin
