I wonder if the author changed the title or keywords when he shipped version 2. That's one of those hidden factors that can make a big difference in sales. (Not to minimize the importance of word of mouth and a great product, of course.)

How is the problem he is solving different? I guess using an actor chain and messages allows you to repeatedly drop many messages through the same sequence of operations. While you might express that slightly differently if you used GCD or

This seems like excellent advice. I've got a heuristic for finding when you're not doing this: when you say "we'll make our product free for now, but we'll charge for premium features later, when we have some that people would be willing

Great writeup, and helpful for people like me. I often know exactly what message I want to deliver and the visual hierarchy I want, but coming up with a nice layout is harder. So the break down is good to see. It was pretty shocking to see

My own reaction was amazement at the obsessive detail they had rendered in CSS. But if you think this is sloppy work, why not try your hand at making something similarly detailed that you feel is done right?

This, however, is not "impact-less": when running truly memory-intensive games, they will experience performance degradation while the OS performs cleanup and shutdown of the various applications "hibernating". I'm not 100% sure, but I th

In that case you might also find this one of the greatest auto designs of all time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citroën_2CV I'd love to create a modern electric conversion of a 2cv, but while I don't hate cars, I don't want to become th

It's definitely clever marketing. But consider that a coupon for the transfer plus a $2 donation means that they are losing money on these transfers, at least until they renew or sell you something else. I'm sure they expect that to pan out

Yeah, but that suggests that the success condition is running a pawn shop. Probably not what you're after if you are a software startup that's just taken seed investment.

This one seems OK though -- he's attempting a taxonomy and does a reasonable job. They just made the headline sound like it was a fill-in-the-blanks top ten list.

Yeah, I meant things like sample code for plain C frameworks, where the author has just decided "hey, why not do this in Obj-C++ instead of Obj-C." As I recall, many of the AudioToolbox examples are like this. Didn't mean to imply that ther

Unfortunately, much of the Apple sample code is also pretty terrible. Here's one heuristic: if you see any Objective C++ files (*.mm) in the project, you can probably ignore it as an example of good style.

This might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamar_S._Smith Lamar Smith is a Texas Republican in a district that is 2/3 R -- any effort to unseat him would have to involve a primary challenge and thus speak to Republican primary voters.

$550k per week? That pencils out to $1375 per hour, a pretty astronomical rate in any industry. Edit: dropped a 0 earlier. I meant to say $13,750 per hour. Nice work, if you can get it.

No doubt, if all music and video was released this way, a lot of it would fail. A lot of music released by major labels fails, too. Movies flop. There are no guarantees. So, I agree with you that Louis CK's marketing is fantastic. But it's

That's bunk. It boils down to saying, "sure, it worked for Louis CK and Radiohead, and Cory Doctorow and Humble Bundle. It worked for Trent Reznor, OK Go, and pretty much everyone funded by Kickstarter... But it could never work for you." T
