Oil paintings aren't painted in a single go. There's a lot of layering involved. So perhaps a better question is, how would you mix the same color twice, if you couldn't tell a range of colors apart?

It's probably a pretty good proxy. The charts in the article are dominated by a few huge investment rounds that resemble privately offered IPOs. If you think going public would be a good indicator of success, that's closer to what's going o

Brilliant. I wasn't sure if he was serious, or if this was a satirical comment on the immigration system. Then I looked at the title of the post (it's been wrongly condensed here on HN).

It's not a moral obligation. It's that there are structural reasons why most web services have a short lifespan. That's a problem because it makes it hard to rely on any new service, and that's eroding user trust. At least among people I ta

If you don't think this is a major problem with web services, you must have either not been around long, or don't use many of them.

I'm with you there. I'd love to go buy a small diesel pickup. They're available all over the world. These days they're clean, incredibly fuel efficient, and have great torque. But no US manufacturers make one and due to tariffs foreign mode

What are you waiting for? You can run almost any modern diesel on biodiesel, and in most west coast cities (at least), B20, B80 and even B100 are available.

So if you can do this with concerts, presumably you can do it with any collection of video shot in the same place, if there's enough audio in common. That makes me think that all kinds of crowd video (protests, speeches, etc) should be stit

They added line by line committing! That is awesome, I've been using citool for that forever, even though it's ugly on a Mac. (Along with diffing, commit surgery is one of the few tasks where a GUI really scores big).

I wonder how this stacks up against Find My iPhone (which every new iPhone user is now prompted to turn on when they set up their phone). It seems like it would have the significant disadvantage that uninstalling the app turns off location

This doesn't make any sense. We can upvote a story 1,000s of times but eventually gravity will win and it will fall to the bottom of the front page. And when it does, it will skew the hell out of that graph.

See below for more details, but in brief: This version - sort of, last 50 or so songs should work offline Planned for update - more control over caching, better view of which songs are available offline.

Can you send me some screenshots? Reach me at phil@yearofcode.com. The app tries to always organize correctly, but to be light on the wire, it has to make some guesses. Your examples of where I'm getting it wrong will help me fix. And, yes,

Thanks! To work around the 1000 songs thing: tap the Browse tab, browse to folder with songs that weren't included. Wait a second, then go back to Artist/Albums/Songs, they will be there and the app will know about them unless you sign out

I totally agree, it just didn't make sense to build all the offline stuff into v1. Obviously I'm just getting started on this, but I'd prefer not to have a switch, but just to do the right thing, and give some cues so you know if it's going

That's a good point. If you have 100s of gigs of music, this might not be the best option. On the other hand, there are lots of people out there who are already have their music library in Dropbox so they can sync it between their computers

Yes - kinda. Recent songs are cached as they play, and library info is maintained locally. So if you know you've listened to a song you should be able to go back and play it offline. v1 doesn't have a good interface for showing you which so

This is my new iPhone app. Been working on it for ages now. I've always wanted a cloud music service I could just drag files into, and I realized Dropbox would be the perfect platform for it. The goal is to make a music player that's as goo

Cool. I've been noticing more of these apps (that virtualize an expensive custom device) lately. Here's another example, an app that replaces whatever gadget piano tuners used to carry: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tunelab-piano-tuner/id

That stuff sure does sound awkward but it's common in news writing. I've always thought they did it to get the subject up front and entice a reader to read the rest of the paragraph.

If it is done well, they should understand it better. Think of a progression from the most abstract interface ("C:\>") to the most concrete (hold hammer, hit things). It's implicit in the article that future visions should be moving fur

This is very good work. I've been doing some iOS music work lately and have a pretty good idea of some of the complexity you've dealt with to get to this stage. Drop me a line if you're interested in chatting (email is in my profile).
