That lays bare the economics of the layoff in a very easy-to-understand way, provided the raises don't eat up all the savings from the layoffs. Using nice round numbers, the following would need to be true for the layoffs to make sense

I worry that the nuance here is not actually down to interpretation, but the consequences of extremely rapid dissemination of information. I don't even think those of us in tech have come to grips with how that matters, let alone if&#x

I suspect that fitting something like this into what looks like standard prescription glasses will require some advances in manufacturing optical materials. I think its already possible to make the appropriate lenses to sufficient precision

Two things: First, power structures are not fundamentally necessary in productive endeavors, but division of responsibility absolutely is. I submit to your authority in situation A, and you in turn submit to my authority in situation B. B

I'm not sure that it was any less toxic, just that the background level of toxicity has decreased. My mother clearly remembers being called out in front of her church for the unforgivable sin of attending a school dance, and that was i

I think there's merit to at least forestalling rule-by-assassination. Like, yes, I would not mourn a lot of people who end up having protective details. But I absolutely don't want to live in a world where all it takes to change a

Yes, but another way to look at it is that the volume of successful strikes of the last few years are making the powers-that-be sweat a bit. This feels like a sacrifice play to me. I'm sure that the cost of improving wages, hours, and

To everyone saying "your code doesn't have to last that long", did y'all miss that the OP is talking about embedded C? There is no nuke and pave with a new framework on an embedded system. At best, you'll see the

I've been hard pressed to find anyone who honestly believes there should be zero consequences for violating laws or generally acting in an anti-social manner. What I find a lot is folks who believe the entire judicial system, police, p

Speaking as a (former) partner of a University of Oregon grad student, what it actually came down to was that folks weren't paid enough to even live in the community they worked and taught in. I was making more at my shitty retail job

My information is about 10 years old, so that makes sense. It also makes sense that such evals are of limited utility, as the people I know who worked down on the ice were ... difficult personalities to get along with.

I'm fond of the Sensirion SCD30. Its low cost, low power, and easy to interface with. A lot of NDIR CO2 sensors pull 5V, so the sensirion's 3.3v power is nice. Digikey is currently out of them, but SparkFun has them in stock. Nice

Camping on a rancher's land with permission is easy. But given the expected crowds, friends in e.g. Glendo (population ~200) plan to be out enforcing their property rights against the anticipated tens-of-thousands of out-of-towners.
