It doesn't just happen to athletes. I saw the same thing happen in the high tech world during the dot-com bubble.

Apple needs applications clients want/need to use. Facetime is a direct competitor to Skype. Twitter integration will help on their social front. This is a 3-way war.

The reason it is not "done right" is because it is really hard to do right with the existing tools. Diabetes is a bitch. 5+ blood samples a day, 4+ insulin injections per day, every day. You can't ever miss one. Hungover? Too bad. Sick?

Design is more than that. It is what users really want, but it is also how they feel when they use it, how it works, how it looks, etc. PMs are great at getting projects done. They herd cats. But very few have studied design, industrial des

The difference is more nuanced than sales. At Apple designers rule, and because Steve understands design, they higher excellent designers. At Microsoft program manager's rule, and a PM is neither a technologist nor a designer. They represe

To move your data you will need to sync to a mac and then manually move your data. Copying from a iOS device is problematic, but that is true today.

"Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns" by Kent Beck (240 pages). K&R weighs in at 274 pages.

I agree 100%. K&R is the standard all authors should strive for. The length of these books is also our fault. Bigger books sell better. I hope there is a backlash brewing. K&R, Little Schemer, Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns, were

Competition is a good thing, hopefully it will push Apple to lower prices and offer more selection. I've used both stores and I strongly prefer Apple's. I prefer the design and I find it easier to discover apps I would consider buying.

I think this is interesting from a DJ or live mix-tape perspective. I have several friends who's taste in music I like. I would love it if they set aside an hour of "dj'ing" live. It is also interesting during a "chat" session.

This is a project to watch. Language agnostic web server with a 0MQ back-end to automagically take advantage of multi-threading/multi-core on modern hardware. Nice. Plus he is running unit tests against code samples in the manual. Brilliant

I learned what truly great leadership was at Microsoft in the mid-90s. My father passed away unexpectedly and I was devastated. My director at the time (who is now a VP), called me at my mother's home, and I was a mess. He told me how diffi

I agree with you, but unfortunately lots of people trust the WSJ. Many people consider it an unbiased source of business information and would think its a good place to leak information. Many people cannot think beyond the brand.

At scale, all components cause "bigger" problems: http server, app server, database/datastore, file system, load balancer, etc. Saying the database is a bigger problem is only true in specific situations.

The runtime invocation is particularly nice for live debugging. You navigate in and out of program scope (using cd) and view variables in scope (using ls). It is all very smalltalk-ish.

The margins in air travel are also slim. Google did a very smart thing here. There business model can support the ITA purchase, not many other businesses could do this. The kicker is they also just hired a lot of talent.
