Is it really just the iOS App Store though? People expect everything to be free nowadays: news, email, productivity apps like Google Docs, games. Don't think you can pin this problem on Apple.

These photos bring up a lot of family history for me. Thanks for sharing them. My mother's family lived in Seoul when the war broken out. During my mother's first birthday party, her aunt and her children came through the door loo

It sounds like you're undervaluing concurrency. Concurrency is huge for a web application. If you were say doing image manipulation or other DSP where you needed "raw speed" you'd want to choose a language like C, Go, Ru

Having BEAM specifically designed for Erlang concurrency gives it a number of specific benefits. Specifically in how it schedules and handles the VM processes to do efficient concurrency. For example, since the processes are in the VM, it c

It's a bit odd asking to fill out a survey rather than merely asking if anyone uses Elixir. Anyways, I've been trying to keep tabs of companies that have been using Elixir, here's a small list: Rosepoint Software Discord Unde

Building off the parent's comment, there's a Graphql library for Elixir. If you aren't familiar, just like Akka it uses the Actor concurrency model and has the proven ability to scale since it runs on the Erlang VM. https:&#

I stumbled upon Google's whitepaper on Dremel. IIRC it explained how to store the data in columnar format, but I didn't quite get how that translated into quick queries. Happen to know where I can look to better understand how it

Seriously, there is a difference between a Buzz Feed title to try to draw viewers into a site that needs ad revenue and a well titled story that has an interesting twist.

I think he's referring to how Erlang uses the Actor Model. An Erlang program consists of (possibly) thousands of individual lightweight-processes. In this model a typical task may be spread out over many asynchronous processes. You can

For anyone interested in Erlang or Elixir, Virding has a great talk on the Erlang VM. It's a good look on how BEAM implements its concurrency. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pwlvy3zz9M&feature=youtu.be

Slightly aside, but is there any evidence that the warmth of the light effects sleep? The cited paper compares a light emitting device to a book, which would not be the same as f.lux and this. Not trying to dismiss this. I'd genuinely

A bit off topic, but have you guys thought about breaking out into electronics classes? I bought a photography class and thought it was quite a nice learning platform. I'd love to learn an Arduino or Rasberry Pi project on it.

Node.js and Elixir/Erlang have two different models of concurrent programming. Node has its single threaded event loop and Elixir uses the Actor model. Practically that means that your code is split into many small individual actors or

The Phoenix Framework uses Cowboy at its core along with a Rack like middleware called Plug. There isn't much bloat in the stack so I'd assume performance is quite close to bare bones Cowboy. It doesn't quite have everything

Robert Virding has a great talk on BEAM (the Erlang VM). He talks specifically about how BEAM handles concurrency. I think it would answer a lot of your questions. A few of his points that would directly apply to your question: 1. BEAM proc

Kind of, since Elixir runs on the Erlang VM and it uses much of Erlang's libraries (e.g. OTP) I'd argue that you can look at Erlang's track record for Elixir's.

Intentional or not, allowing ad blocking on the mobile web should push content creators that rely on ad revenue to develop native applications. This seems like a double win for Apple.
