Ah neat, I used Soundrop when it was around. You guys should do a write up on the architecture now that it's closed down. Any material on in production BEAM apps are gems for me.

Where do you work? If you don't mind me asking. I'm always curious as to what companies use Erlang. My interest in he language came from Elixir, now I can't stop playing around with Erlang/Elixir.

I'm not too familiar with Scala nor Akka, but know that Akka uses the actor model for concurrency. How does it differ from Erlang/Elixir?

Check out Seven Concurrency Models from Prag Prog. It does a good job of going over concurrency. It doesn't explicitly go over Node.js or Go's concurrency model, but it talks about the pitfalls of concurrency with shared memory an

If your interested, Jamie Winsor of Undead Labs did a talk at Erlang Factory on how they use Elixir for their backend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i6n-eWiVn4 Also theres a good writeup on how Erlang was used for some o

Phoenix as a framework is on par with many frameworks in other languages as far as features. It shines in certain areas, such as websockets, because of Elixir/Erlang concurrency. The community is solid and Chris Mccord et al are doing

It's weird, Ive worked with a few people from Epitech. They say the same thing about software engineering in France, but they are some of the best developers I've had the privilege to work with. If it drives them to work over here

Segment.io seems like the type of challenge that would be right in Erlang's sweet spot. The talk that Whatsapp gave on scaling Erlang is a good proof point that it's built to handle these systems quite well.

For those interested, Facebook had a good talk about this at Scale 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhXC4SKOGfQ [edit] I just realized the video is linked on the front page of the frameworks website.

Isn't this just the same as, "share with your friends to get a better place in our waiting list" that others have employed. I remember Robinhood doing this and wondered if it really moved my place or was simply a growth hack

Half of our engineers did not go the academic route. A few went through intensive programs such as hacker school and a few were self taught. There are definitely jobs out there that look at skill and experience over a degree, but on the fli

I don't think Ruby is targeted at beginners or newbies if thats what you're implying. The language seems simple at first, but once you start delving into the features that make it a dynamic language it is quite deep.

Heroku doesn't automatically scale it for you, though you have the ability to increase the number of dynos. There are services that will do that for you, but it's probably better that you have to explicitly scale so you don't
