I should have mentioned this was done client-side, by a Python script: http://code.google.com/p/fftresize/source/browse/fftresize.p... Like so ( edit: note that you'll have to edit the image first to make it grayscale, and even then this

I've interpolated the image linked in the article (suspect-number-2.JPG) to twice its size, if that helps at all (only in grayscale for now): http://www.eliteraspberries.com/images/suspect-number-2-749.... (17MB)

It is not possible to infer anything from such a low sample population (45). For statistically significant results, you would need to spend on the order of $1,000 not $100.

This is perfect for numerical computing applications like software-defined radio or image processing, which can now be done on embedded platforms. I'll definitely be ordering a board when they're available.

Congratulations. With that kind of success, I hope you treat your employees well. Most are probably poor women supporting their families. If I were ever to use a service like yours, the cleaners' wellbeing would be the deciding factor.

When you submit a paper to an academic journal, the reviewers do not know the name or origin of the authors, and make a decision based on the contents only. Conferences should select talks using a similar process. This would prevent potenti

Yes, at the moment points 1 and 3 are enough to distinguish Tor traffic from other HTTPS traffic. They're working on a few solutions though: https://www.torproject.org/docs/pluggable-transports.html.en

One way to avoid loss of precision in the conversion is to check if the number of digits in the integer is larger than the constant DBL_DIG (defined in <cfloat>) -- numbers with less digits than that constant can be safely converted

Every C++ developer should read this. I've done research on integer arithmetic, which includes some of the pointer arithmetic issues discussed here. This is one of the best article I've seen on the subject so far. Thanks for sharing. This i

That's been my experience as well. Those of us left in Canada are those who have not yet made the move to the US. Given the option, I know precisely where I'd be, and it's not here.

Great initiative. It may be wise to steer the kid towards something more educational, like a Snake clone in Python or something. RPG Maker teaches nothing.

It's interesting to see the developing world adopt GNU/Linux. Venezuela created Canaima. [1] Turkey created Pardus. [2] Iran has announced plans for a national distro. [3] Russia has announced plans for its public sector to use free softwar

I doubt that. It is explicitly against the PyCon Code of Conduct to photograph attendees without their permission. Adria Richards did just that, on company time.

It is never appropriate to distribute photographs of people without their permission, in any context. I think SendGrid is justified in their decision.

If I may ask, what made you think it was appropriate to take a picture of this person and distribute it without his permission or the permission of the venue?

Sure, you can always design for the 99%. Over time, however, you will be designing for the 50% -- after 70 iterations to be exact (that's log(.5)/log(.99)). Companies that do this end up with a very loyal, very small user base. Is that what

I used to think people actually wanted privacy. (I did, why wouldn't everyone else?) But the data does not support that hypothesis -- in fact, I think the exact opposite is true. People's personal information is not being stolen from them,

They don't charge the people that count. When I worked for an airline, we were told to just ignore complaints from customers who flew less than several thousand miles per year.

Google could probably implement this with Youtube. Their automated translations are a start, but if viewers could edit the transcripts as the video plays, they could come up with good transcriptions very quickly.

Primarily, package managers solve the problem of dependencies. [1] For example, if you want to install a piece of software X -- which depends on A and B, and A in turn depends on C -- then the package manager will install all of these for y
