We always have this discussion in these threads. There should be a HN wiki for these things. It's not just a name because it does measure true progress over time. We should just use density of transistors per area because that is incre

NVR is a different problem. I meant the software inside the IP cameras themselves.

IP cameras need their WRT54G moment. It would be amazing to have an openwrt like project for them. The software is a complete mess full of bugs and security issues.

The apps probably run in XWayland just like any other X apps. The Window Manager is trickier but apparently XWayland has recently gained support for running a full X root so technically yes: https://www.phoronix.com/news

It will depend on where you are. I'm in Europe and it used to be that the usual retailers had no DDR4 ECC options at all. Now there are 1 or 2 available and still no options for DDR5 ECC. Looking at those pages your suppliers seem much

With AMD that limitation is somewhat lifted with normal consumer CPUs and quite a few motherboards having support. Unfortunately the RAM itself has very poor availability. Very few manufacturers offer it and it tends to stick to the standar

But it didn't go away. Event based servers were developed to handle slow clients with good performance as frontends for pre-fork or threaded application servers. This innovation is an optimization of a pre-fork backend server that itse

By wafer doesn't sound like the correct comparison as we mostly care about top nodes for this. Revenue actually sounds better to correct for that. Your link also shows that Intel sells their old nodes to others further skewing the per-

It's very similar to that setup. I don't think that was particularly common though and probably the reason prefork went away. Particularly as apache and later nginx were used as the user facing webservers proxying to something els

That was only forking the apache process. This is forking the whole ruby app that also happens to speak HTTP. The gain is in the app side not in the best way to serve HTTP where this is probably a loss over threading or event based solution

Obviously exceeding total GDP is not possible and we'll stop well before from just commercial considerarions as you describe. The question is how much of that is inherent to the problem and how much is lack of innovation. And we'l

Most people believe Moore's law has already stopped on the density side. Jim Keller claims we have 50 more years of it at least. If it failed on the economic side only instead then the implications are very different. I do wonder if on

If all you wanted was to deliver on the density you could just keep most transistors dark and still stay within the power budget. That's not very useful in general but maybe there are some aplications for it. AMD has been shipping thei

Is gallium now deprecated within Mesa? The way this post is written it seems that way but I could swear I had read a similar post recently about other hardware in mesa leveraging gallium to get to a working driver faster.

If you switch from i3 to sway you can use the serial number instead of the port to assign outputs. I think these days it's usable with even the proprietary nVidia driver.
