I found it interesting. If you generalize a bit, the question is "Will a naively written stdio program handle IO errors?". The fact that for several popular languages the answer is "no" is disappointing.

I suspect it's some sort of color ASCII art format. Character/attribute pairs with probably some control information. That explains why the other files have readable text.

The article doesn't make this explicit, but this game is just using LZEXE. This was an executable file compressor that was very widely used in the early 90s. An early project by Fabrice Bellard!
