Unfortunately in many industries, companies are allowed to regulate/inspect themselves. Because they supposedly have more experience with it than the government, and it saves on government spending.

Most likely you technically get 0% interest. I'm currently at something like 0.05%. I remember back around 2005 I'd get 4% interest on my checking account. Feels bizarre now.

It could be that legal requirements are a constraint, but I think that the lack of investors is the real issue. Because we're not really comparing Europe to "all of the US", we're comparing all of Europe to Silicon Valle

I'm not sure this is entirely fair. Nobody elected the people who inspect nuclear powerplants either, but I still assume that they're doing a good job in protecting humanity. Even if they are possibly "highly priviledged"

Honestly I think the best reason to use an altstore is to avoid the 30% tax that Apple and Google charge for using "their infrastructure". Both claim that users could use alternative stores and therefore charging 30% is not an abu

I spent some weeks trying to make a GPT-3 D&D GM, but indeed it just won't work. I haven't tried GPT-4 yet but this post makes me want to test it for sure. The problem I had with GPT-3, most of all, was that it tries to "

You're right, I'm not sure what I was thinking. I thought OP was hinting that being white was preventing them from going to college or getting a good job because of positive discrimination, but now I'm not sure how to interpr

It was not my intention to present a strawman: I assumed that by "affect" you really did mean "prevent". I.e. being Asian-American prevents some people from gaining entrance to Harvard, in this case.

People have been using this argument against me since I was a child: "this is good for you because the big bad world will crush you", but frankly I thought it was nonsense back then and I still do. The world is not filled with tea

I agree that this is a much better metaphor. I've often worked with developers who want to build the foundation for a skyscraper just to build a dogshed.

It might, I'm not sure. It depends on many factors: how much cloud discount are they getting, for example? And do you count the cost of training all previous models before chatGPT, or just the cost of training chatGPT itself? But you m

Indeed, it seems to me that a paper proving that nootropics are either harmful or helpful would be quite publishable, which is (unfortunately?) what modern science is all about.
