This was a very interesting read and I hope that she continues blogging about her startup journey. Having interviewed the team, I have my own expectations for how it will play out, so I would love to see how that matches with reality. Howev

I was explaining both the power law distribution and expected value, and somehow that all got mushed together into one quote, incorrectly unfortunately.

The shape of the graph proves it's a bubble? I don't own any bitcoins, but this kind of silly fud makes me think I should buy some...

You are unable to comprehend how someone could have an experience and opinion which differs from the HN groupthink?

This reminds me of the time that Facebook rounded up all of the Japanese-Americans and put them in internment camps.

Exactly. Perhaps I needed to manage the transition between the parts a little more smoothly to avoid losing people who have an allergic reaction to the g-word. When things are difficult, talk of God inevitably arises from many good and well

That is kind of weird. It's my FriendFeed pic from a few years ago. I just changed it to my current fb profile pic :) thanks

An axe-wielding rapist is mentally sick. I would still love my children, even if they had a horrible sickness. Love is not a reward.

I care about the world that my daughter will grow up in, and I think it's important for people to understand that love isn't something that can ever be given or taken by force. It must be a gift.

Then you don't understand. One needn't believe in anything metaphysical to appreciate the power of a concept.

It's generally not possible to do anything "revolutionary" without encountering some very severe obstacles. The status-quo guards itself.

This is a great attitude because it moves the locus of control from outside of yourself ("I'm a helpless victim of everyone else") to inside ("this is my fault"), which is generally a more productive mindset since it puts you in control of

Certainly the name has value, and smart founders will use that, but if that's all they are after, then they're missing the most valuable bits (and are therefore probably not very effective founders, and a bad investment).

You probably heard about it post-yc. It was initially a thing for renting out airbeds (airbedandbreakfast.com)

I think that there's an element of that. People who are just joining yc for the name are there for the wrong reason.

It's always the little details. My limited experiences with Android (I try it every year or so) always end when I get annoyed by basic things not working. The tablet I got at Google I/O 1.5 years ago would power off every time it was fully

I think Meraki was the 4th startup that I ever invested in (first was Wufoo). When we visited their office in Mountain View, it was full of "Meraki Minis" (their first batch of hardware). I asked how much money they had raised so far, and t

It's still a rather remarkable milestone. In a relatively short amount of time, the #1 "unstoppable" company in tech was passed by both it's smaller competitor (Apple) and an entirely new company (Google).

By definition, every huge success has a strong growth strategy :) That said, it often isn't obvious from the beginning. When I met Dropbox at YC, I don't recall them having any great plans for how to grow. I think that was discovered later

As best I can tell, success = luck * skill. The big successes that I've seen all have exceptional founders, but that's clearly not enough. Timing is a huge component as well. Often a good idea will fail simply because the market or technolo

The counter-intuitive nature of startup investing is a big part of what makes it so interesting to me. In most aspects of life, we are trained to avoid risk and only pursue "good ideas" (e.g. try to be a lawyer, not a rock star). With start
