How about we just make it 10-5?

Yes, and instead of writing an open standard or adapting Vulkan when it came around, they instead decided to double down on proprietary and moved to Metal 2.

The trashcan Mac Pro was announced almost 9 years ago. Apple today is a very different company. They've moved onto chiplet designed SoC's with little to no care about upgradability.

They've moved on to chiplet design. Don't disregard their clear direction to SoC's with non-upgradeable RAM, GPU, CPU.

Unfortunately that runs into the issue of education, expense, and general preference. We're never going to remove it by relying on consumer choice.

I myself have a 135TB home server. I am well aware and invested in local data hoarding. It still doesn't remove the fact that it's getting harder to find certain media. Additionally, most people can't spin up a server... hell

Records are a different story because they're more of a collector's item. Interesting with CD sales going up, but I assume shortly we're going to start seeing the CD/DVD drive go away. I mean it's already out of mos

Even if their claims are accurate, it usually has the asterisk of *Only with Apple Metal 2. I honestly cannot understand why Apple decided they needed to write their own graphics API when the rest of the world is working hard to get away fr

I wish my fiber ISP was part of that 50%. But nope, here I am behind a CGNAT and was promised IPv6 adoption about a year ago. Unfortunately the only other options in my area (downtown Milwaukee) are some form of wireless, DSL, or Spectrum.

Lots of flux and a way to inspect it. There's tons of cheap USB microscopes out there now that you can use for soldering. If you put a tiny bit of flux underneath the connector, heat it up, and let it sit you'll make it tacky and

Yep, the better terms to use are ones like stable or anchored. Companies that aren't trying to push the bounds of development and are just trying to work for their own business.

By clever I mostly mean, from what I've seen from reports, handling stuff like transition from x86 to arm by baking in instruction translation into the die. Their approach with some things is a bit different from what others are doing,

I didn't say that they wouldn't go Arm, I said they wouldn't buy chips from Apple. Apple would never sell it like that.

It's all going to come down to user experience and versatility. Apple is doing some crazy stuff with the M1, but I personally would chock (most of it) it up more to being clever than true innovation. I think only Intel needs to be conc

It's because of their loyal customer base. The culture they've developed since the very beginning has set them up as almost too big to fail. Without that "cult"ure you don't get to set up their type of vertical inte

Not to mention that Apple setting a standard of throttling at 100c and not giving the machines adequate cooling affects performance in a non-trivial fashion.

I think this is RIP to the Mac Pro for anyone that cares about extensibility. I can't see Apple making a board with a socketed CPU of their own silicon. I'd even say something like RAM would be a stretch.

I love what Pine is trying to do, but man those A53 CPUs and Mali-400 GPUs are really pretty crummy. Similarly spec'd Allwinner chips were on the PlayStation Classic and Nintendo Classic microconsoles.

3-4 years ago it wasn't difficult at all to replace macOS with pretty much any EFI-enabled OS. Moving to a proprietary ARM CPU/GPU will probably result in not being able to write applications unless it's using Apple's to
