Sure - the only benefit of a VM is that you can mess up the VM's filesystem without worrying about it too much.

Download Ubuntu and run it as a virtual machine inside your current machine (use Google for instructions - it's fairly straightforward with a piece of software called virtualbox). That should stop you from running into hardware related

It's bold move, but necessary to stop people going into work. The tubes here in London were still packed a few days ago, because low wage earners still need to travel in to earn and put food on the table.

A lot of UK broadband is advertised as "unlimited" but subject to a fair usage policy. I guess they must use a similar system to the one you described. It's pretty decent, and I'm never really thinking about my usage, wh

Gold is generally not free to store. If anything, it is one of the more expensive things to store safely. Also, if someone handed you a shiny yellow object saying it's gold, you'd still need to verify it with a chemical or physica

Yes, I have considered that, however the downvote patterns on those topics are unusual for HN. I've been here a few years, and know when something feels a bit off. Also, I'm not saying something that is wildly incorrect - just go

You'd be surprised. I can imagine they've got a bit of link submission karma, which allows them to downvote. For what it's worth, I'm upvoting you!

Yes, I am perplexed by this. I have noted an insane number of bots commenting positively on Donald Trump's twitter account. It's obvious they're bots because of the username, lack of other activity, spelling and grammatical m

I suppose they haven't yet had a chance to test it fully in the field, so they don't know the error rates. Doesn't necessarily mean the test is useless.

Looking at lines 460-521 in the modified file ( https://github.com/miguelxpn/php-src/blob/f4b2089b642d504be3... ), is there not a benefit to `break` out of the while loop in the nested if statements? Otherwise,

The article highlights a huge pitfall of having lots of small dependencies, provides no real remediation, and says small dependencies are easier to reason about, so they're better anyway. I disagree. I personally find that with large p

It feels especially religious to me as a Hindu. A lot of Hinduism talks about a so called "sense of existence" - a vitalising, fundamental "thing" that permeates inanimate and animate beings. The quote reminded me a bit

I'm surprised they don't do it for the obviously fake accounts posting in favour of Donald Trump. There's something very fishy with some of those comments, and the profiles that they come from are very sparse. It should be

Not to mention the pain if you're selling low value (sub-penny) items, that get scaled by weight or some other dimension. The errors can often throw out invoice totals in the most annoying manner.

I personally hated the ribbon in Excel, not least because it resulted in changes to all the shortcut keys. That killed productivity significantly for me and my colleagues on my trading desk. We got used to it eventually, but it was not fun

I don't think Apple would even notice a fine of such a small amount. If you want to reprimand a corporate, you must make it hurt a little, otherwise it has little impact on their future behaviour.
