i is commonly used as the unit vector in the x-dimension (a basically meaningless term without more context). 3-dimensional vectors are often written as: 5i + 2j + 3k. Since you can assume that 2 is getting multiplied by the unit real vecto

The media doesn't have such a pro-corporate message in the UK. The Economist, widely considered a conservative paper, is wholly in support of government-run socialized health care. The BBC is also a great source of news that's not as tainte

Why k > 2? k > 1 is bad enough. Otherwise, recursive fib(n) would be just fine (O(~1.618^n)).

Step #2 involves learning LISP. As I embark to learn elisp, am I then to re-install Linux and emacs and SLIME? Then make my way to step 2 again...

I hate to derail, is that ripped from Greg Proops? If you're going to steal, he's a great source for material :)

It's suburban, which means the roads are generally 40MPH or faster, and cars drive extremely aggressively there. Though a busy SF street may seem chaotic, the upper limit on speed gives drivers a lot more time to react to you and vice-versa

Cycling in the same roads as Miami drivers must feel like a gamble for your life. (I cycle every day here in SF, and I used to live in Fort Lauderdale, I speak from partial experience).

As thorough I'd say. I don't think they really suspected me of anything, as a white Jewish kid, but I'm not very religious and maybe my answers to their religious questions while claiming Judaism as a religion was a red flag.

As another anecdote, I was questioned heavily going into Israel for the Birthright program (flying out of Miami on El Al). They actually confiscated my Nintendo DS because I didn't have a game to play for it in my bag. I also got a full phy

Since you're a Heroku employee (sayeth the HN profile), I assume this is a Socratic-method type question. I don't really care to research it, though, so perhaps you would like to elaborate?

I haven't had to manage a site at that traffic level before, but is there really a use case where you're immediately going from no managed hosting to needing $1500/month in managed hosting? I don't doubt these are the resources necessary fo

I see one obvious potential for improvement. My word was 'treatise' and I asked for prefixes, and I got things like: hurttreatise.com but that's not a very good domain name because it's ambiguous when spoken whether both words are fully spe

Do you "trust" your iPhone to auto-correct? One thing I've found helps a lot is to just allow yourself to finish a word with a mistake in it and hit space, assuming the auto-correct will get it right. It feels backwards at first, but I thin

Certainly not me, but a little birdie whispered in my ear that it makes writing boring boilerplate/glue/test code a lot more tolerable.

One thing I'll say is, that in the ingredients columns, experienced cooks know that (uppercase) 'T' is tablespoon and (lowercase) 't' is teaspoon, but why not explain on hover (or just spell it out)? I imagine units are somewhere in your DB

If only 10% of all companies work employees too hard, that means we're achieving 210% care-i-tude! Seriously, though, a lot of companies may discourage people working longer than 9-5, which accomplishes the same goal but would be "uncaring"

Sure it's 33% the size of PNGs. It's 33% the quality. Am I the only person in existence who hates the "quantization" look? edit: The strength of PNGs is not photography, but images with large blocks of solid colors; screenshots, etc. That's

I worked at a company developing proprietary image processing SDKs (more like libraries) for .NET/ActiveX. We actually had very extensive QA, probably >100% code coverage (at least 1 test for most code paths) in unit and functional tes

I use the wmii window manager which is based off some Plan9 principles. Surely you wouldn't bring it home to grandma, but for fast efficient use of screen space with a keyboard I think it's hard to beat.
